About the Item

Autograph Letter of Thanks by Renato Guttuso to Libero de Libero. Signed. After 1937. In Italian. In 8. One page, double-sided. On light blue colored paper and on letterhead "Galleria Mediterranea / Palazzo de seta , Palermo". On watermarked paper "Carteria San Marco". Excellent condition, with usual medial fold. Perfectly readable. Not only a letter of thanks, but also this autograph offers us some technical details of the Guttuso's sales after some important exhibition in Italy. At the end of the letter, the Sicial artist greets his friends Corrado Cagli and Mirko engaged in exhibitions at the new La Cometa Gallery in New York, a branch of the same-named gallery opened by the Countess Anna Laetiia Pecci Blunt and a springboard for the generation of Roman Schol artists. Background: The years 1937 - 39 are the most important of Guttuso's life: he moves permanently to Rome, his ateliers will often be at the center of his pictorial compositions and will become one of the most lively and interesting intellectual centers of the capital's cultural life, attended by personalities like Alberto Moravia, Antonello Trombadori and Mario Alicata who will have a decisive role in his adhesion to the Communist party, which he will join in 1940. These are the years of the extraordinary still lifes, of the Shooting in the countryside (dedicated to Federico Garcia Lorca), of the Escape from Etna, which will receive the Bergamo award, at that time the most important painting award in Italy. In the same year he meets his long-life partner, Mimise Dotti. He collaborates as a critic at Le Arti, Primato and Il Selvaggio, directed by Mino Maccari who dedicates an entire issue to his drawings (1939). He paints nudes, landscapes, still lifes and realizes the scandalous Crucifixion (1940-41), his most famous artwork and one of the most significant paintings of the twentieth century. The painting, presented at the Bergamo award in the autumn of 1942, where it will receive the second prize, causes a great scandal and the Vatican prohibits religious from looking at the work. In 1940 at the Teatro delle Arti in Rome, directed by Anton Giulio Bragaglia, Renato Guttuso made his debut in musical scenography, signing sets and costumes for the Histoire Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, Sicily, 1911 – Rome, 1987), The name of the Sicilian artist is always associated with artworks of strong moral and political engagement: he was a fervent opponent of fascism and a devoted communist, and as an artist he supported Socialist Realism. Libero de Libero (Fondi, 1903 - Rome, 1981) The Italian poet, art critic and storyteller moved to Rome in 1927 and came into contact with the artistic and literary fervor of those years. The following year, with Luigi Diemoz he founded the literary magazine Interplanetario, which had Corrado Alvaro, Massimo Bontempelli and Alberto Moravia among its collaborators. In those same years (from 1928 to 1934) the group of painters of the Roman School was formed in the studio of Mario Mafai. De Libero followed these artists assiduously and commented on their works with the first essays on Mafai and Scipione. He often edited the catalogs of the La Cometa Gallery, founded with the Countess Pecci-Blunt in 1935.
