About the Item

Early 19th century European folk art painted wood wedding, hope or bridal chest. A superb example of a European hope or wedding chest in remarkable condition Of characteristic dome top form, each surface (except for the back panel which is plain) is magnificently hand decorated with flowers, mostly tulips and birds. All the decoration is set on a rich blue ground with white banding to the edges. It has its original iron handle and lock. The patination is absolutely superb and this has obviously been a used and cherished object for many generations. To one side panel is a label for 'Dieppe' suggesting this may be a French box but the decoration is also characteristic of marriage chests from eastern Europe. A chest of this size and ornamentation most likely would have served as linen storage for a woman preparing for married life. Eastern European Folk Designs: The most captivating aspect of Eastern European marriage chests is their vibrant folk art traditions. There is no better example of this than the Hungarian “tulip boxes,” named for their distinctive floral motifs. These pieces showcase: Bright, appealing colours reflecting local traditions Symbolic decorations specific to each region Distinctive patterns marking national and local identity In Central and Eastern Europe these chests were given a lot of importance and were kept in the best room of the house and at times on a table. What makes these pieces so special is the fact that they became the bearer of some of the greatest folk art traditions of Europe and every region had its own way of designing the patterns and colours.
