About the Item
"Intermission" by Alexandra Rozenman is a small 20 x 16 x 2.5 inch oil on canvas painting that draws one into a surreal stage-like setting. A dark background is interrupted by bright reds, blues and greens that appear lit from within. Everything is unexpected and strange. We feel ticklish because everything is recognizable, but nothing familiar. On the left side of the foreground, we see rows of red numbered theater seats and on the right a green field. We are looking at a stage, bridge and a soccer field all at once. A funny but mysterious hot plate is frying an egg next to a whistling tea kettle and a swarm of white insects is flying away from it into the dark night. A human head sits on the grass with the bright ball behind it. Full moon? Apple? Soccer ball? Everything is possible in this world!
Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. The artist states, "Whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping change". Rozenman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
