Bernard Ward Turner
Two Borzois by a lake in a landscape, with a country house beyond

1970

About the Item

Bernard Ward Turner (British, 20th Century) Two Borzois by a lake in a landscape, with a country house beyond signed ‘B. Ward Turner/ BRSA.’ (lower right) oil on canvasboard 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61 cm.) frame 26 ¾ x 30 ¾ in. (68 x 78.2 cm.) This elegant painting by B. Ward Turner depicts a pair of Borzois, their lean forms and long, silken coats beautifully rendered against a romanticised English landscape. One lies gracefully at rest, the other stands alert, both framed by autumnal trees with a grand country house visible in the distance. The composition exudes refinement, evoking the aristocratic associations of the breed. Turner, a member of the R.B.A., was known for his refined portrayals of animals, and this work captures the quiet nobility of these Russian hounds with precision, atmosphere, and period charm.
