About the Item

This lively and gently humorous watercolour, typical of the British School of the 19th century, captures a spontaneous rural moment: a woman grasping at a runaway cow that has broken free from its tether. The foreground is animated by the figure of a country woman, dressed in a long, blue skirt, her hair tucked beneath a bonnet. She leans forward with one hand outstretched, clutching a rope, trying to regain control of a large cow that’s lunging away from her, mid-stride. Behind them, several other cows remain in their enclosure, observing the commotion. Among them, one cow turns directly toward the viewer, its gaze calm and slightly quizzical, adding a touch of charm and subtle wit to the scene — as if acknowledging the absurdity of its companion's antics. The watercolour measures are 24.5x31cm without the frame
