About the Artist:
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Brooke Major moved to France over twenty years ago to follow her two passions: painting and breeding horses for show jumping. Today, her painting studio is the grain loft of an 18th-century farmhouse on the beach in Normandy, where she paints and raises her horses. Brooke works in oil paint using palette knives to make paintings that create the effect of low-relief sculptures. Quite often, her images are white on white or very lightly tinted against a white background. In choosing her subjects, Brooke revisits her childhood experiences of traveling, horses, and architecture. Many of her architectural paintings celebrate the priceless architectural legacy of Normandy.

American artist born 1979 and native of Atlanta, GA, Brooke Major has been living and working as a professional artist and sharing her time between the USA (Georgia) and France for the past 20 years. As a child, Brooke has always been top of her class in drawing and painting, as well as an avid equestrian, which led her to move to Normandy to breed and raise them for the sport of showjumping. She moved initially to Paris to study political science at an American university, but felt herself drawn more towards the arts and followed auditing classes at the Beaux Arts school in Paris. Her political science studies led her to work for over a year and a half as an intern at the US Embassy in Paris. Following her two childhood passions, art and horses, Brooke moved to Normandy and started her dream of breeding show-jumpers and set up her art studio in a grain loft in a 18th century farmhouse on the beach where she creates her work and raises her horses. Brooke sculpts oil paint, using pallet knives challenging both techniques of painting and sculpting and exemplifying light and shadow. She chooses all of her subjects from her childhood experiences: travelling, horses and architecture. Brooke also depicts her everyday life in her recent subject of her landscapes of the typical Normand countryside.

Down by the Pier
By Diana Tremaine
Located in Burlingame, CA
'The Wind Whipped Up and They Welcomed Its Offering' - seagulls stand against an abstracted beach scene in this contemporary oil on canvas painting, 'Contemplating Progress II', by artist Diana Tremaine, whose series of paintings that depict abstracted birds and natural elements is called "Navigating Crosscurrents". The 45 x 45 inch painting beautifully bridges abstraction with realism via a calming palette of warmth and layers of paint.
Tremaine's dynamic, representational and nature-centric oil paintings reflect a search for truth and meaning. The artist develops brushstrokes and marks by adding and then obliterating some of the story in a free-association editorial process of discovering what is most important and lasting. The melancholy images echo her experiences in an autobiographical fashion, but they are also universal and touch upon and evoke our collective memories like ghosts of what was. Created with a limited palette, there is visual poetry in her surfaces, including the tension that exists when simultaneously holding on and letting go.
Diana Tremaine's Artist Statement for this series, 'Navigating Crosscurrents': "I am often taken aback by the might shown by tiny little songbirds managing the winds and rains that at times surround them. In my “Navigating Crosscurrents” series, the birds stand as metaphors for the human experience while the abstraction around them represents the forces - both internal and external, natural and man-made - that act around and within each of us every day. Life is a balancing act – at times breezy and light, at others cacophonous and overwhelming. These images speak metaphorically to the delicate balance and fortitude required as we journey down our respective paths."
The bicoastal New York City-born artist studied and taught in both Northern and Southern California. She later moved to Montana—in a search for spiritual space and room to breathe—where she works and lives with her family, dogs and horses.
