About the Item

Fine oil painting in an impressive large size, (38" by 50" in the frame) after one of the most renowned animal painters of the late 18th century/early 19th century, Charles Henry Schwanfelder (1774-1837). Born in Leeds UK Schwanfelder became the Court Animal Painter for Kings George III and George IV. He exhibited regularly in the Royal Academy and his work is held in galleries and museums including the National Trust. This painting is largely taken from one of Schwanfelder’s famous works of a pointer and two spaniels. Presented in a wooden carved, gesso and gilt frame of 19th century style, this is a vintage painting in a Victorian period frame, possibly late 19th century to early 20th century. This is unsigned and undated with provenance to an estate in Illinois. Likely British in origin with the period frame. Hand-painted oil on canvas, re-creating the work of Schwanfelder dating to the late 1800s, this is presented in very good overall condition. The frame has wear consistent with age, but the painting and frame present very well overall. The original Schwanfelder painting the two spaniels and a hound sold at Sotheby's for more than $20,000 in 2016. (Sotheby's April 28 2016 sale). That sold painting was a smaller size than this one on offer now. Presented with a papered backing and hanging wire, ready to hang!
