About the Item

Tschaggeny Flemish Pastoral Landscape 1849. The Belgian author in this 19th-century oil on oak panel painting depicts a bucolic scene, a landscape with animals and a shepherdess, of great pictorial quality; a peasant girl rests in the shadow of a tree, a bucket and an amphora lie on the lawn to his left, sitting with her back against a fence, the shepherdess is intent on stroking the muzzle of a compliant cow. At his feet is squatting a sheep with a lamb. The scene in the foreground is framed by a flat rural landscape with architecture in the distance, the bucolic setting evoking a tranquil atmosphere characterized by stillness, harmony, and simplicity. In excellent condition this painting is presented within a carved and gilded wooden frame. This landscape is signed and dated lower right Charles Philogène Tschaggeny (Brussels 1815-1894); brother of Edmond animalier painter and anatomist, author of the 'bovine anatomical atlas for the use of artists, whose watercolor anatomical plates are at the Catholic University of Leuven in Louvain-la-Neuve. Charles Philogène Tschaggeny was the protégé of Eugène Joseph Verboeckhaven the world-renowned animal painter of the time, specializing in painting horses in particular and to the Animalier genre. Active as a painter and engraver in the Netherlands, where he won a gold medal at the Brussels Salon in 1845 and in 1846 at the Antwerp Salon, but also in England, in London, Oxford and Cambridge, where he moved in the years 1848-1849. He established himself as one of the best Romantic, animal portrait artists by consolidating an excellent commercial reputation, thanks in part to his patrons such as King William II of the Netherlands, Leopold I of Belgium, and Maria Henriette of Austria. England's Queen Victoria herself, a great admirer of his, purchased a painting for her collection in 1851. Tschaggeny became a member of the Royal Academy in 1865.
