About the Item

"Red Rooster" Oil and Wax on Linen, 24 x 27 Inches Charlotte Gibbs recently had the distinct honor of being awarded First Prize in The Roddy Compeition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts in Concord, MA where she was singled out among 560 submissions for this award by Katherine French (former Director of the Danforth Museum. current Curator of Catamount Arts, and voted "Best Curator of Locally Made Art" at the Boston Art Awards). Gibbs, a highly accomplished and trained artist, reveals her love of folk art and naive painting in these beautifully painted still lifes (fruit, vegetables, china), animals and portraits which both acknowledge 'Americana' and a respect for sophisticated and classic realism. Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had 3 one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery in Boston where she has been represented since 2004 and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides. Her works are in excellent private collections and she has completed numerous portrait commissions.

"Stars and Stripes" Americana Pop 23 Karat Gold Leaf/Red/Blue Oil, Flag Painting
By Charlotte Andry Gibbs
Located in Wellesley, MA
"Stars and Stripes" 23 Karat Gold Leaf and Oil on Linen 26 x 50 Inches Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized American flag. "Stars and Stripes" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple distressed white wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement. Also available is a smaller version of this painting, "American Standard" 18 x 34 inches, as well as a vertical variation "Vertical U.S. Flag" 34 x 18 inches. Additional variations of the American flag series are available without 23 karat gold leaf ("Reverse Image" in black and white, "Flag #4" in black, white and tan, and "Black and White" which is black, gray and white). The artist's "Canton" series of paintings focuses on stars only. Paintings from this series are available in navy blue with gold leaf stars ("Canton Major" 34 x 48 Inches), olive drab with gold leaf stars ("Canton Olive and Gold" 30 x 42 Inches), and all 23 karat gold leaf ("Starry Splendor" 30 x 42 Inches). Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation (horizontal or vertical) palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client. Additionally available are flag paintings in various sizes inspired by the British flag with and without 23 karat gold leaf ("Sgt. Pepper Jack," "Union Jack Red and Gold," "Union Jack Navy and Gold," and "Union Jack White and Gold"), the Scottish flag...

Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a detail of the graphically idealized stars of the American flag in gold leaf against an olive ground, "Canton Olive and Gold" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple natural wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement. German Israeli Expressionist "Rooster" Batik Style Painting Print on Silk Fabric
By Jacob Pins
Located in Surfside, FL
Jacob Otto Pins (17 January 1917 – 4 December 2005) was a German-born Israeli woodcut artist and art collector, particularly of Japanese prints and paintings. Jacob Pins was born in Höxter, Germany, the son of Dr Leo Pins, a veterinarian, and his wife Ida Lipper. He immigrated to Palestine in 1936 to study art. His father tried to discourage him from becoming an artist for financial reasons. Pins' younger brother, Rudolph, (1920-2016) moved to the United States in 1934. His father was sent to Buchenwald. In July 1944, both parents died in the Riga ghetto. Pins first lived on a kibbutz, which was disbanded in 1941. He moved to Jerusalem and studied woodcut and linocut under woodcut master and painter Jacob Steinhardt, also a German immigrant, at his small private school. He lived in poverty in a tiny room, subsisting on a meagre diet. He continued his studies at the new Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Pins was married to Elsa, the subject of a number of his prints. They had no children. Pins bought his first Oriental print in 1945, and acquired a house on Ethiopia Street, opposite the Ethiopian church, where he lived for the rest of his life. He continued collecting until his death and was one of Israel's foremost art collectors. His book on Japanese Pillar Prints, Hashira-e is the definitive work on the subject. Pins died in Jerusalem in December 2005. Pins' artwork was heavily influenced by German expressionism and traditional Japanese wood block printing. From 1956 to 1977, he taught at Israel's leading art schools, most notably Bezalel, where he later became a professor. He was known as a demanding teacher, emphasizing strong technical skills and discipline. In the 1950s, Pins helped to found the Jerusalem Artists' House, a centre for the city's artists to meet and exhibit. Legacy Pins' extensive collection of Japanese woodprints...
