Oil Painting: A Pekingese "Lovely Maid of Kyratown"
by Dorothy Alexandra Johnson (1902-1988)
signed lower right
oil painting on canvas, unstretched
5.0 x 7.0 inches
A delightful painting by the highly regarded English dog artist Dorothy Alexandra Johnson. Features a pekingese with its formal kennel name.
Signed lower right and inscribed lower left. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Dorothy Johnson. It is small but beautifully executed. On unstretched stiff canvas, too small to stretch, so the ideal way to display this would be affixed to a backing board and framed to suit your taste.
The approximate 1950's date we have attributed here is based on the canvas being a different type to some earlier work we had in the collection, and knowing that Lovely Maid of Kyratown was born in 1943.
Dorothy Alexandra Johnson was born in 1902 in Nottingham, England, and remained there her whole life. Attending the Nottingham School of Art and having studied under Arthur Spooner, a respected animal artist, it is no surprise that her work from the 1930's focused entirely on art relating to dogs, recording images of many significant canine breed champions.
condition report:
Very clean, good clear strong colour, has been stored for many years, never on display. No creases, all good and clean.

Portrait of Dodo - Pekingese Dog - Scottish 1920's art dog portrait oil painting
By Samuel Fulton

This absolutely charming portrait of a Pekingese dog called Dodo is attributed to much loved Scottish artist Samuel Fulton. Pekingese Portrait - British Art Deco oil painting dog interior animal artist
By George Denholm Armour
Located in London, GB
A beautiful British portrait of a Pekingese dog by George Denholm Armour. Dated to circa 1920, it is a superb Art Deco animal portrait with bold brush strokes and vibrant colour. The dog's name is, I believe, written in Japanese top right.

Housed in a gilded 1930s Art Deco frame, 35 by 32 inches framed. In excellent condition.

He graduated from the University of St Andrews and the Edinburgh College of Art. He moved to Tangiers, Morocco to paint and buy horses. When his money ran out, he moved to London and shared a studio with Phil May. He met Joseph Crawhall...
