About the artist:
Ferjo studied at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1974-1979, where he concentrated on landscape and portraiture. It was during this time that Ferjo began painting Cubist style landscapes and eventually moving to realist portraiture. This latter style is best evidenced by a mock group portrait (1978-1979) of the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy, in which Ferjo posed his subjects in positions reminiscent of those of Leonardo Da Vinci's "Last Supper". Since receiving special accolades from the Pennsylvania Academy, first in 1978 and then again in 1979, Ferjo's command of realist painting became widely recognized in galleries. After leaving The Academy, Ferjo's natural artistry led him to explore a myriad of themes and styles, ranging from Realism to Surrealism.
Ferjo's compositions combine the old masters and the new, in a magical bounty of color, surrealism, fantasy and beauty. His affinity for tokens adds a personal dimension to each work. Images of pencils, bubbles, fish, strawberries, and broken eggshells float throughout his work. The surrealist worlds he creates pay homage to Bosch, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali, Monet, Manet, Matisse, Miro, Modigliani, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Mucha and Chagall. In Ferjo's world, the laws of perspective and scale are given new meaning; space and time are manipulated in fantastical arrangements, giving the viewer a sense of falling into another dimension.
Whimsical, colorful and technically refined, Ferjo's work is an exuberant mix of Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Realism and Surrealism. Ferjo is a master painter with a style he can truly call his own. Ferjo's work is sought by collectors and galleries worldwide.

Ferjo, Fernando de Jesus Oliveira
Where Dream Meets Reality Surrealist artist Ferjo creates a whimsical world of contradictions. A fish and strawberry adorn the canvas to represent life; a butterfly is suspended in the air to represent freedom. And such is the multifaceted work of Brazilian-born artist Ferjo, whose art—created in his signature Surrealist style—make up a body of work as diverse as the items floating in his artwork. “A teacher at my school told me I had something that nobody had—this ability to paint portraits and landscapes,” the artist says. “It’s more difficult because there are millions of artists who paint classically. That’s why I paint ‘dream and reality.’ There’s almost a classical theme, and at the same time, it’s a dream when you look at it.” Born Fernando de Jesus Oliveira, Ferjo was raised in São Paulo, Brazil, where his artistic skills were recognized early on. In 1974, the young artist was invited to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts on an exchange program after being commissioned to produce a portrait of an American family. The artist considers his time in school beneficial but believes true artistic talent comes from within. After a stint producing portraits for the Brazilian Board of Tourism, he left his country to take up permanent residence in the United States, where he joined forces with publisher Katherina Perry in 1994. Like many great contemporary painters, influences from Dali and Picasso, among other Masters, are evident in his art, but Ferjo takes it a step further in a series dedicated to the artists in which their famous works appear as paintings on the walls of his Surreal worlds. “Those are the artists that inspire me, and I pay tribute to them,” he says. “I put their paint in my paint.”

Born in Albi in 1909, Josephine Beaudouin (née Cals) showed an early interest in drawing. At the age of twelve, she moved to Paris where her mother, Jeanne Ramel-Cals, ran a literary salon that was frequented by art world figures such as Ambroise Vollard. In 1925, while her first drawings appeared in the magazine Crapouillot, the young artist entered the School of Decorative Arts where she studied fresco painting. She married the architect Eugène Beaudouin in 1928, with whom she traveled throughout Europe. Beaudouin, a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, designed a series of buildings that were precursors of modern architecture in France (Clichy, Maison du Peuple; Antony, Résidence universitaire Jean Zay). Josephine Beaudouin exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.
The work of the one that Jean Cocteau described as "bewitching" is full of mystery. Her work bears the stamp of an extraordinary personality. Indeed, Josephine Beaudouin developed a penchant for dreams at a very early age and took refuge in the works illustrated by Gustave Doré. Her technical virtuosity and overflowing imagination were praised by the critics of her time who unanimously greeted her Marmorées (ill.1). Named by René Barotte, these are paintings made on marble slabs from 1955. The artist exploits the infinite resources of the veins of this support which inspires him poetic compositions with unusual subjects. Marked by surrealism, she returns to the fantastic by delivering a prodigious creation of the mind made of dreamed cities and trompe-l'oeil.
The 1948 painting that we propose probably represents a red-billed chough. The bird is a recurring theme in the work of Josephine Beaudouin, as in her life. An avid ornithologist, she kept an aviary in her Parisian home where many island birds were kept. She also built up a collection of stuffed birds. Still on this theme, the writer Claude Aveline (1901-1992), author of the poem L'Oiseau-Qui-N'Existe-Pas, invited several visual artists to freely interpret what this bird could be. The first series of works was produced between 1956 and 1963. In 1957, Joséphine Beaudouin delivered a work with a pen of great finesse, now preserved at the Centre Pompidou (ill.2). Several renowned artists also responded to the invitation of the poet such as Jean Cocteau and Ossip Zadkine.
The precision of the graphics of our painting testifies to an attentive observation of the anatomy of the birds. The artist paints with great delicacy: the technique is impeccable, the drawing is careful, the material is smooth, the details are represented with great finesse and mastery.
