About the Item

Francis Mabel Hollams (British, 1877–1963) Bumble, 1957 Oil on wood panel With characteristic precision and affection, Francis Mabel Hollams captures the spirit of a beloved companion in Bumble. Painted in 1957, this portrait of a Shih Tzu—rendered against a soft, sunlit field—reflects the artist’s deep sensitivity to animal character and form. The dog’s alert expression, finely textured coat, and slightly wind-ruffled stance convey not only anatomical accuracy but also unmistakable personality. Hollams was one of the foremost animal portraitists of the early 20th century, widely known for her paintings of horses and dogs. Working almost exclusively in oil on wood panels, she developed a distinctive style that combined the warmth of domestic familiarity with a disciplined, almost classical approach to composition. Her works were popular among the English gentry, particularly those in the equestrian and sporting circles, and many of her commissions still reside in private collections. In Bumble, we see her talents distilled: the careful modeling of fur, the elegant balance between subject and background, and a palpable sense of connection between painter and pet. As with many of Hollams’ works, the animal’s name is inscribed into the surface—giving the painting the feeling of a cherished keepsake, equal parts fine art and heartfelt tribute. The frame is a new hand made American style arts and crafts frame
