This captivating painting from around 1890 depicts a Swiss Golden Eagle in a dramatic mountain landscape, fending off Carrion Crows. Oil on canvas, signed F. Furet.
Francois Furet (1842–1919) spent his entire artistic career in Geneva, where he was born and died. Initially trained as an enameller under Louis-Samuel Rosselet, he later studied painting with the renowned Barthélemy Menn, becoming one of his favorite students. Furet began exhibiting his works in Geneva in 1861, focusing primarily on landscape painting, where he achieved both success and recognition.
As a member of the Bovy family’s utopian phalansteries in Gruyères, Furet formed connections with influential artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet. He also shared a studio with Auguste Baud-Bovy, collaborating on significant projects like the famous diorama of the Blümlisalp. His artistic achievements culminated in contributions to the celebrated panorama of the Swiss Alps by Baud-Bovy (1891–1892). Over his career, he created numerous decorative works, including pieces for the Château de Gruyères, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Plainpalais town hall.
Honored with a medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris and the Legion of Honor in 1896, Furet’s works showcased his mastery in capturing the essence of Swiss landscapes and animal life. His legacy endures as a key figure among the "Emulators," a group of Menn’s disciples who shaped Geneva’s artistic identity in the late 19th century. Furet exhibited frequently in Geneva between 1861 and 1898.
An almost pendant painting by Furet, depicting a weasel on watch towards some Hooded Crows, is held in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, showcasing the artist’s keen eye for capturing wildlife in dynamic, natural settings.
The Golden Eagle, often called the "King of the Skies," boasts an impressive wingspan of up to 2.2 meters. Remarkably, it is the only large predator in Switzerland to have survived the era of intense persecution that eradicated species like the Bearded Vulture, lynx, wolf, and brown bear. Today, Golden Eagle populations in the Alps have recovered and are thriving.
The Carrion Crow, native to western Europe, including Switzerland, complements this scene with its dark, foreboding presence—a perfect counterpoint to the majestic eagle.

Wallner suffered from poor health throughout his life, which led to isolation from other children. To occupy himself, he copied nature and animal studies from magazines, which later influenced his artistic direction. His first known work, a still life, was created in 1903. Over the years, he refined his technique, taking early inspiration from Bruno Liljefors, though his own style became highly detailed and realistic, with a deep focus on nature and wildlife.

This finely executed plein air landscape depicts the monumental bridge of Ariccia and the town with the surrounding Alban Hills, painted by German landscape artist Joachim Ludwig Heinrich Daniel Bünsow (born 1821 in Kiel, died 1910 in the same city). Executed in oil on paper mounted on cardboard, the work dates from his Italian period between 1853 and 1858. Not signed.
Bünsow received his artistic training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1839 to 1848, studying under Johann Ludwig Lund and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. In 1844, the Copenhagen Art Association acquired his painting "Tellingstedt in Dithmarschen." Following his studies, he traveled to Dresden, where he became associated with the circle around Johan Christian Dahl. A scholarship from the Copenhagen Academy enabled Bünsow to reside in Rome from 1853 to 1858. During this period, his landscapes evolved from the finely toned, naturalistic style of his early work to more atmospheric and idealized compositions, influenced by Louis Gurlitt.
Bünsow's early works from his time in Copenhagen are characterized by fine tonality and naturalistic rendering, reflecting the style of his teacher Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. His Italian landscapes, however, exhibit a more atmospheric and idealized approach, influenced by Louis Gurlitt. Notably, Bünsow produced high-quality drawings during his time in Rome, some of which are preserved in the Kunsthalle zu Kiel.
Historical Context: The Ariccia Bridge
In the early 19th century, the local authorities sought to improve the Appian Way's safety and accessibility. The solution involved constructing bridges to span the Ariccia valley and adjacent ravines. In 1843, Pope Gregory XVI commissioned a six-arched bridge to address the elevation differences. Following his death in 1846, Pope Pius IX continued the project, entrusting architect Ireneo Aleandri with the design and Giuseppe Bertolini with the execution.
