George Goodwin Kilburne landscape horse/equine hunting scene 19th century oil painting A fine painting by the renowned artist George Goodwin Kilburne .oil on panel, framed the size being 26.5cm by 37cm whilst overall the size is 51 x 41 cm. A whimsical scene of English country life with horses and riders with the poor attendant having obviously fallen and dropped the picnic!!. Entitled "taking a fence" the work is Signed and dated (18)96. In good condition having had previous restoration and recently cleaned. The frame also in good restored condition with some minor age related cracks. provenance The Boydell Gallery, Liverpool George Goodwin Kilburne RI, ROI (1839-1924) Kilburne was born in Hackford, near Reepham, Norfolk and was educated at Hawkhurst, Kent. At the age of 15 he went to London to serve a five-year apprenticeship as a wood engraver with the Dalziel brothers. . His paintings often portrayed fashionably dressed figure groups, sometimes in Regency costume. The themes included musical gatherings, social events and sporting occasions. . For much of his working life Kilburne lived in fashionable Hampstead, north London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery and elsewhere and was a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Miniature Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Works by him are in the collections of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery and Sheffield Art Gallery. His eldest son, George Goodwin Kilburne Jnr, also became a very successful artist.
