About the Item
This work by Harry B. Tallman is a pertinent example of his vividly alive works portraying two English Setter Puppies with in a barn filled with hay. The details are truly exquisite, as Tallman was a Realist academic painter. This piece is an example from his traditional hand, portraying the puppies with find details and beautiful brushwork. The painting is an oil on canvas signed by the artist lower left, it comes housed in a beautiful gold tone wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Harry B. Tallman was Born in Cranston, Rhode Island in 1861. His parents were James B. and Sophia Tallman and at a younger age in 1880 he worked as a Wood Engraver, and in 1886 he married Mariana Bisbee. During his life, Tallman created many animal portrait paintings and wrote several articles about dogs, and in 1892 the “Fanciers Journal” in their Christmas Number listed H.B. Tallman as one of the artists. In the 1900s Tallman worked as a photo engraver, he also was featured in “First Lessons in Dog Breaking” Outing Magazine. October 1901. During that time, he also participated as a handler in the Connecticut ‘Field Trial Club’ and the ‘Run at Hampton’ with English Setter Belle, Miss Irish, Blue Roan Bitch, Peggy & Derby. A decade later he also worked as an engraver, for a jewelry company in 1910, until he became the owner of a Jewelry Store in 1920. His love for dogs always kept him involved with many activities like dog competitions and shows. He was an active member of the Hamptons New England Beagle Club, eventually becoming one of the officers for the executive committee. Harry’s wife, Mrs. Tallman, during her life, was also the author of several books, letters, poems, limericks, and articles for advertising contests. Harry B. Tallman Died in Providence, Rhode Island in 1949.
