About the Item

"Loving horses in a countryside hay harvest landscape" signed P. Laruche, which appears to be a pseudonym used by Henry Schouten This peaceful painting two loving horses in a sun-lit countryside landscape. The horses, tenderly place their heads against each other, whilst the farmers are working together to harvest the hay, emphasising the beauty of connection and love within a close-knit family unit, both between humans and animals. Henry Schouten was born in Indonesia in 1857, and studied at the Academy in Brussels from 1876 until 1881. A year later he started exhibiting in Brussels with the Union des Arts. An expert animal painter, he usually chose to depicts the animals in their homes or everyday environment and acting in a very natural way. The oil on canvas measures ca. 65 by 55 cms and with the period gilt frame ca. 80 by 72 cms. Provenance: Private Collection Late 19th / early 20th century. Signed lower right.
