Yet this image is frequently a projection—idealized, exaggerated, formed in a child’s mind in an attempt to find stability in an uncertain world. Iryna explores the theme of inner barriers and cognitive distortions that arise from the gap between the idealized image and the reality.
Here, “dad” becomes a metaphor for an internal structure that combines ideal and fear, stability and distortion, hope and loss. The piece invites the viewer into a dialogue with their own experience of childhood reverence and later disillusionment, exposing the moment when the ideal begins to crack under the weight of reality—and the soul starts searching for a new foundation within itself.
Reflections:
The figure of the father is one of the first great symbols of authority and love in a child’s life. The ideal dad often emerges as a compensatory fantasy, especially when the emotional bond with the real father is weak, unstable, or traumatic. This image, saturated with expectations, becomes a framework for the illusion of safety. But over time, the grown child must acknowledge the person behind the projection—a regular, flawed human being.
Iryna’s work doesn’t offer answers; it captures a state of awareness and transformation. The ideal dad here is not a person, but an inner “demon” of expectations that, over time, becomes a heavy mask we are forced either to remove or reshape into something more truthful. It’s an attempt to reconcile with broken illusions and return to the self through the painful yet liberating process of recognizing reality.
