About the Item

James Bateman (1814-1849) A fox at bay signed and dated 'J. Bateman 44' centre right Oil on panel Painting size 8 x 10 in Framed size 13 x 15 in James Bateman (1893–1959) was an English painter known for his deeply felt portrayals of rural and agricultural life, particularly the landscapes and livestock of the British countryside. Born into a farming family in Kendal, Bateman’s early connection to the land would remain central to his artistic vision. He first trained as a sculptor at Leeds College of Art, but after suffering a serious injury during World War I, he turned to painting and printmaking—a transition that marked the beginning of a remarkable career. Following the war, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and was soon recognised for his talent, becoming a finalist for the Rome Scholarship in 1920. He went on to teach at Cheltenham School of Art, then Hammersmith, before settling into a long and influential teaching post at Goldsmiths College from 1929 onward. During his early years in Gloucestershire, he was inspired by the surrounding farmland and rural communities, often cycling through the Cotswolds to sketch farmers at work and the rhythms of daily agricultural life. Bateman began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in the mid-1920s and steadily gained recognition, eventually being elected a Royal Academician in 1942. His work was also shown with the New English Art Club and the Royal Watercolour Society. He became known for paintings that were both finely observed and warmly human—scenes such as Haytime in the Cotswolds, Cattle Market, and Commotion in the Cattle Ring reflect not only his technical skill but also his empathy for working rural communities. His compositions often feature cattle in fields or markets, workers gathering hay, and quiet moments of farm life rendered with dignity and care. During World War II, Bateman was commissioned to document life on the home front, producing evocative works such as Women’s Land Army at Work and Evacuees Assist with the Hay. These paintings not only served as records of national effort but also carried forward his long-standing interest in the everyday heroism of agricultural labour. Bateman’s work is characterised by a strong sense of composition, precise drawing, and a naturalistic palette. His attention to the form and movement of animals—especially cattle—was grounded in lifelong observation and deep familiarity. His paintings are held in major public collections across the UK, including the Tate, the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle, Southampton City Art Gallery, and Cheltenham’s own museum. In addition to his painting, he authored a respected book, Oil Painting, published in 1957. James Bateman died in London in 1959, leaving behind a body of work that remains a vivid tribute to the English countryside and the quiet resilience of those who worked the land.

Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822–1891) was a British equestrian and sporting artist, and the son of the acclaimed Leicestershire painter John Ferneley Sr., one of the leading figures in 19th-century English horse painting. Continuing the family tradition, Claude developed a refined skill in depicting horses, hunts, and rural scenes, often drawing from the vibrant sporting life of the English countryside. Although he lived somewhat in the shadow of his more famous father, Claude Lorraine Ferneley maintained a solid reputation among country patrons for his ability to portray horses with anatomical accuracy and spirited realism. His paintings often captured the energy of the hunt and the elegance of equestrian portraiture, appealing to a clientele that prized their animals as both companions and status symbols. His work is noted for its clarity, control, and fidelity to the traditions of British sporting art, and today, Claude Ferneley is recognized as an accomplished artist in his own right, contributing to the enduring legacy of the Ferneley name in English equestrian painting.
