About the Item

Johann Georg de Hamilton (1672-1737) A saddled officer's Arabian horse with a hound and gun, in a landscape Oil on canvas Canvas size - 21 x 23 in Framed size - 27 x 29 in Provenance Sale, Christie's New York, 13th November 1997, Lot 91; The Collection of Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. Johann Georg de Hamilton was a distinguished Austrian painter of Flemish descent, renowned for his depictions of animals, particularly horses, hunting scenes, and still-life compositions featuring game. Born in 1672, he was part of the esteemed Hamilton family of artists, which included his father, James Hamilton, and his brothers, Philipp Ferdinand and Karl Wilhelm de Hamilton, both accomplished painters in their own right. Raised in an artistic environment, Johann Georg developed a meticulous style, excelling in rendering the anatomy and movement of animals with remarkable realism. His paintings were highly sought after by the European aristocracy, particularly for their vivid portrayal of equestrian subjects, which aligned with the interests of noble patrons who valued hunting and horse breeding. He became a court painter for the Habsburg monarchy, serving in Vienna and working under Emperor Charles VI. His expertise in capturing the dynamism of hunting dogs, majestic horses, and dramatic chase scenes made his works highly esteemed in the imperial collections. Many of his paintings can still be found in museums and private collections, particularly in Austria and Germany. Johann Georg de Hamilton’s legacy lies in his ability to combine technical precision with a deep appreciation for nature, making him one of the most respected animal painters of his era. He passed away in 1737, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to be admired for its artistry and historical significance.
