About the Item
This superb British Victorian exhibited portrait oil painting is by noted artist John Scott. It was painted in 1884 and exhibited at the Royal Academy London the same year, entitled An Incident from The Marsh King's Daughter with a quote from the Hans Christian Andersen book, The Marsh King's Daughter. (see details regarding the story below). In the large and vibrant composition, Helga, wearing a long lime green dress, sits by a lily pond in the foreground, leaning against a tree stump. To her left are a number of large storks that look as if they are communing with her. Beyond are trees and the sky line. The painting has a magical feel to it and is painted with great sensitivity and detail. The brushwork and colouring are superb. This is a wonderful example of Victorian exhibited art and John Scott's skill as a 19th century British artist in rendering this enchanting story.

John Scott RI, RBA (1849–1919) was an English artist, born in Carlisle, Cumberland. His father and grandfather, both also named John Scott, had a business as gilders and manufacturers of stained glass. He had his early education at Hannah's Academy in Carlisle. He later studied at the Carlisle School of Art, while also working in the family business. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1872, and also showed works at the Carlisle School of Art's exhibition. The local newspaper described his Preparing for Market as of considerable dimensions, very ambitious, but possessed of the elements of real success. He continued his studies in London at Heatherley’s Studio and at the Royal Academy Schools. By 1879 he was living at Cannon Street, London. In that year he exhibited works both at the Royal Academy and in Dublin. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1882 of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI) in 1885. He painted landscapes, religious scenes and genre works in oil and watercolour, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (R.O.I.). Scott's watercolours range from rapid sketches to the highly finished works such as "The Convent Garden" 1911, and "Loves Young Dream". He married Georgiana Ellen Miller of Lechlade, Gloucestershire, at Kensington in August 1887.
“The Marsh King’s Daughter” by Hans Christian Andersen is a captivating fairy tale that unfolds against the backdrop of a pair of storks. These storks winter in Egypt and then migrate to Denmark, where they nest on the chimney of a Viking warrior’s family home. The marsh nearby harbors a dark secret—the wicked Marsh King resides there. The storks, in their timeless wisdom, share stories with their little ones. These tales revolve around moors, reed banks, and other natural wonders. The youngest storks delight in simple nonsense, while the older ones crave deeper meaning and stories related to their own lineage. Among the storks’ narratives, two stand out. The first is the well-known tale of Moses, who was abandoned by his mother on the banks of the Nile. Discovered by the king’s daughter, Moses received an education and went on to achieve greatness. However, the location of his burial remains a mystery. The second story, less widely known, unfolds in the wild moorlands of Wendsyssell—a vast, desolate expanse in northern Jutland. Here, the storks recount the enchanting saga of Helga, a child discovered by a stork and raised by Vikings. By day, she appears as a beautiful but fierce human; by night, she transforms into a gentle yet ugly toad. Helga’s true home lies near the waters of the Nile, where her destiny awaits/ This tale weaves together elements of magic, transformation, and the timeless connection between nature and humanity. Enjoy the journey into Andersen’s mystical world!

View AllOut of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist.

Collecting Flowers
Oil on canvas, signed with monogram
Image size: 23.5 inches x 17.75 inches
Size including frame: 29.25 inches x 23.5 inches
A highly appealing genre painting of a young girl holding flowers by Jane Maria Bowkett. The girl is posed in a wild flower meadow in front of a wooded area and wears a white lace dress with a pink sash. On her head is a yellow straw hat decorated with white feathers and a ribbon. She is shown gripping the brim of her bonnet with one hand whilst holding a posy of flowers in the other. The girl bears a resemblance to the models featured in some of the artist's other paintings and could well have been a family member.
Jane Maria Bowkett was a figure and genre painter born in Poplar, London on 17 September, 1837, the eldest child of Thomas Edward Bowkett and Jane Bowkett (nèe Watkinson). The family lived at East India Road where he father practiced as a surgeon, later becoming a doctor and was involved in the Chartist movement. Three of her sisters, Eliza Martha Bowkett (1839-1867), Jessie Undine Bowkett (1861-1886) and Leila Matilda Bowkett (1853-1924) also became artists.
She attended the Government School of Design (now Royal College of Art) and in 1858 began her exhibiting career at the Society of Female Artist. In 1860, she started exhibiting at the British Institution and a year later made her debut at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. As well as exhibiting in London, she also exhibited more widely at the Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Bristol Academy of Art and the Brighton Art Society. Most of her paintings were genre scenes featuring woman and children in a mixture of both interior and landscape settings. Her work also included a number of beach and coastal paintings.
She married the still life and landscape artist Charles Stuart on 7 February, 1862 at All Saints Church in West Ham. Although married, she continued exhibiting under her maiden name. The couple spent the first years of their married life living in Stepney Causeway where they started a family. One of their sons Charles Edward Gordon...

A pretty oil on canvas by John Lochhead (1868-1921) a listed British artist born in 1868.
