About the Item

John W. Morris (United Kingdom, 1865-1924) Cows to pasture Oil on canvas, 91 x 69 cm John William Morris is a British artist best known for his landscape paintings and animal scenes set in the picturesque region of the Scottish Highlands, among the most fascinating in the entire United Kingdom. Often, the stars of his canvases are highlander cows, a breed typical of that area that is distinguished by its long, shaggy coat and lyre-developed horns. A true symbol of the Highlands, and, more generally, of the Scottish territory, these animals catalyze Morris's attention, who, in his commercially successful works since the end of the nineteenth century, makes them the protagonists. The landscape genre turns out to be one of the most popular in nineteenth-century English painting. The theme is interpreted by 19th-century British artists in various ways: from the idyllic, archaic landscape of classical tradition to the romantic landscape, a mirror of the artist's feelings and worldview rooted in a desire for expressive authenticity and thematic freedom. By mid-century, in Britain as in most other European states, a realist type of landscape emerged, based on the more faithful representation of nature and its atmospheric and seasonal changes, made possible by the practice of en plein air painting. English artists are also stimulated by contemporary discoveries that take place especially in the French sphere (the first exhibition of the Impressionists in France in 1874 is held in the workshop of the photographer Nadar): they, in light of recent innovations introduced in painting, experiment with new points of view, new techniques, different perspectives with changed sensibilities that go beyond the simple view, often landing in a new and fascinating vision.
