About the Item

Ken Peloke has been featured in Western Art Collector, Western Art & Architecture, Luxe Magazine and is displayed in both public and private installations throughout the U.S. and abroad. His collectors come from Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Scottsdale, Jackson Hole, Ketchum, China, Austrailia & Singapore. Born 1978 in rural New York, Ken is the youngest of four children who were raised by a single mother. He began painting and drawing at the age of seven. His mother was usually unable to provide proper art materials, so Ken used crayons, pens, house paint, cardboard, the backside of scrap wallpaper and even the walls in the house to sketch his drawings. He and his family moved to Arizona when Ken was 9. Private oil painting lessons and a trip to Sedona, Arizona inspired him to paint landscapes, which he painted throughout his high school days. Ken was not one for the books as he spent many of his school days feeling lost, confused, or just dreaming in the classroom. However, during this time he entered many juried art competitions with good success. Ken felt like he was starting to find himself through his art. While attending a local community college, Ken progressed to figure painting and drawing. But after a few semesters and feeling frustrated with his progress and lack of direction, Ken gave up painting and pursued a seemingly more practical road to an artistic career, Graphic Design. Although it turned out to be short lived, learning Photoshop, animation and photography would prove beneficial in his future process for creating his wide variety of work. At just 22 and frustrated with an undefined career path in art, Ken took what ended up being a seven year hiatus from art entirely. The desire to pick up a brush again didn’t happen until he heard the news of his first child on the way. He was going to have a daughter and a flood of new emotions filled his heart and mind. Ken began painting large abstract pieces which he explained were inspired from non subjective forms in his mind and raw energy. This presented an entirely new freedom for Ken that he longed for but never knew how to unleash. Now at 37, he is hard at work using both the subjective world and the bold abstract world together in his work. His latest pieces reflect a bit of all his background and Ken prides himself on being versatile. Ironically, Ken is colorblind, and although this used to present a challenge for him as an artist, he has learned to control his color palette to limit his frustration. Through experimentation and self teaching, Ken has learned to use all of his past works whether it be, landscapes, people, animals, abstracts, design or even photography in his current work. Over the past 5 years, Ken has found his latest inspiration by spending time with his wife’s horses. His bold, large-scale pieces capture the pure essence of the horse while still challenging his artistic talents. His multimedia approach creates depth and incredible realism to his pieces that give them a one of a kind contemporary appeal. As he states, “There is such honesty, grace and purity that is felt while spending time with our horses, as an artist I feel compelled to try to relay those same emotions to the viewers through my work.” "Being a self taught artist, and having color deficiency, led to years of frustration, but through trial and error, methodically over the years I have found what works for me. I work with many layers, different substrates, and all types of media. Instead of using traditional methods and colors to create depth; I use my surface. I feel it is the most important element of my work."

Shawn Faust, "Motorin", Black and White Equine Horse Race Charcoal on Canvas
By Shawn Faust
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
This equine drawing, "Motorin'" is a 30x40" charcoal black and white painting on canvas by artist Shawn Faust depicting a horse and jockey in full leap. Complimentary to Faust's traditional oil works, these charcoal on canvas sketches boast a clean and contemporary feeling exhibiting the muscle tone and mass of these majestic creatures. Fixed with varnish, these charcoal works are permanent and best framed or unframed. About the artist: Shawn’s love and fascination for drawing came as an unexpected gift from his grandfather at the age of 5. Young Faust was a tag-a-long during his grandfather’s impromptu plein air art lesson with his older brother in the back yard of his Aunt’s house. A retired director for the American Red Cross, Shawn’s grandfather, who had only recently picked up the brush himself, began a charcoal sketch that would forever change how Faust would see the world. From that brief lesson, Faust recalls vividly, “The techniques I witnessed from my grandfather that day, were pure magic!” With his newfound gift of magic, Shawn quickly began practicing his art of 3D illusion for anyone who wanted to see it. During his childhood, you would be hard pressed not to find Shawn doodling on a piece of paper at some point during the day. Among his favorite things to draw as a youngster were his comic book heroes. Instead of reading the comics, he spent all his time studying the line work and muscle forms of the comic book characters. And so, began his interest in portraying the human form. Upon entering college at the University Of Delaware, Shawn enrolled as an accounting major yet emerged with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1990. At the U of D he is forever grateful for the privilege of studying under distinguished artists Stephen Tanis, Charles Rowe, Robert Straight and Rosemary Lane. Shortly after graduating, Shawn embarked on a career in Illustration. By 1993 he had quickly become one of Delaware’s prominent architectural illustrators working for more than 75% of the homebuilders in Delaware. Between illustration jobs, Shawn pursued his interest in portrait painting. In 1992 Faust was commissioned to paint the official portrait of outgoing Delaware Governor, Michael Castle. Continuing his quest to learn more about portrait painting, Faust studied with Daniel Greene in 1995. He credits Daniel Greene for giving him the greatest key to unlocking a whole new way of seeing and interpreting color. By 1995, Shawn’s portrait commissions and easel paintings were supporting him as much as his illustration jobs, so he decided to focus entirely on his fine art career. This included opening a gallery and custom frame shop with his wife and brother. During the twelve years of owning and operating the gallery, Shawn continued his intense portrait research by focusing his studies on the eyes of his favorite subject, the horse. His head studies of horses caught the attention of Mr. Richard Golden, a prominent horse owner in Chesapeake City, MD and president of Northview Stallion Station. Northview is best know for standing Northern Dancer...
