About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Lucinda Holland captures a quiet, heartwarming moment in Ducklings in a Box, where two fluffy ducklings share the wooden frame of what feels like a nesting box. With her masterful use of oil on wood, Holland gives the soft, downy texture of the ducklings a near-photographic realism, contrasted beautifully against the aged wood grain and creeping ivy that frame the scene. A tiny ladybird at the bottom adds a dash of whimsy and surprise. Working in her signature hyperrealist wildlife style, Holland invites viewers to notice the stillness and innocence of animal life. The muted greens and greys of the wood frame are thoughtfully balanced with the warm yellows and oranges of the ducklings’ feathers and beaks, creating a natural harmony that soothes the eye. Every brushstroke is intentional, from the delicate shadows to the gloss on the ducklings’ eyes. The piece is imbued with both charm and detail—a reminder of the simple joys of nature observed up close. There’s a gentle story unfolding here, one that feels familiar and comforting, as though stumbled upon in a childhood memory. Holland’s meticulous technique and emotive choices make this painting more than a study of animals—it becomes a little portal into stillness and curiosity. Artist Biography: Lucinda Holland is an emerging British artist known for her exquisitely detailed Trompe L’Oeil oil paintings that merge wildlife with imaginative still life compositions. Her work explores the beauty and fragility of the natural world, often depicted in framed box-like settings where storytelling, emotion, and subtle symbolism come together. Many of her paintings extend beyond the substrate’s edges to heighten the three-dimensional illusion, creating life-sized renditions that evoke a striking sense of presence and depth. Originally a graphic and web designer, Lucinda’s creative journey took a profound turn following the loss of her partner of 25 years to suicide in 2023. In the wake of this tragedy, she discovered solace in painting and quickly uncovered an innate talent for highly intricate and realistic work. What began as a form of personal healing soon developed into a professional path, as her pet portraits and animal studies gained recognition for their warmth and precision. By 2025, Lucinda transitioned toward more narrative and conceptual still life pieces, combining her fascination with illusionary art and her deep love for nature. This shift led to a distinctive body of work that has already earned awards and growing attention within the art world. Each piece reflects her interest in the way people interpret animal expressions and interactions, as well as her ability to imbue her subjects with emotional depth and subtle humour. Much of Lucinda’s inspiration is drawn from her surroundings. She has lived in the Middle East for over 25 years and frequently spends time in Cornwall caring for her elderly mother. Both places, rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, influence her visual storytelling. She often incorporates antique or everyday objects into her compositions—infusing each scene with layers of meaning and quiet reflection. Sustainability is an integral part of her practice. Lucinda frequently sources reclaimed vintage wood from old furniture, which she carefully prepares as surfaces for her oil and acrylic paintings. Occasionally, she carves the edges of the panels to further enhance the illusion of depth and realism. Lucinda’s work continues to evolve, but at its core is a consistent sense of wonder, attention to detail, and a desire to bring stillness, story, and the natural world into close and intimate view. Explore the captivating realism of Lucinda Holland’s still life paintings, where wildlife elements seamlessly merge with exquisite detail and storytelling. Celebrated for her extraordinary attention to detail and masterful technique, Lucinda Holland creates works that exemplify the finest in photorealistic artistry. Each painting is meticulously crafted to capture the quiet beauty of everyday moments, often featuring animals in imaginative still life scenes that draw viewers into a world of illusion and wonder. Now available to purchase online and exclusively through Signet Contemporary Art, her paintings are a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication to her craft—offering collectors the chance to own truly distinctive and emotionally resonant works of art. “My goal is to transport the viewer into the world I create on canvas. Through the beauty of realism and the illusionary effects of Trompe L'oeil, I strive to make each piece feel alive and full of delightful emotion. There’s something magical about transforming nature into art, and I’m honored and grateful to have found the hidden skill I have, and the opportunity to share the results with viewers and collectors alike.” “There is something profoundly compelling about how we project our own emotions and narratives onto creatures that experience the world in ways we can never fully understand. We humanize their gestures, their gazes, their postures—and so I endeavour to evoke joy and humour in the viewer derived from the expressions and poses of the creatures I create.”- Lucinda Holland.

19th Century animal oil painting of a duck & ducklings on a river bank
By Constant David Ludovic Artz
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Constant Ludovic Artz Dutch, (1870-1951) Mother Duck & Ducklings Oil on panel, signed Image size: 9.5 inches x 15.25 inches Size including frame: 16.5 inches x 22.25 inches A delightful painting of a mother duck with her ducklings by constant Ludovic Artz. A white duck can be seen sitting on a river bank surrounded by her five ducklings. Two of the ducklings are shown taking rest by her side as the others forage close by. Constant David Ludovic Artz was born in Paris on 3 June, 1870, the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) and Josephine Jouanin. His father was a Dutch artist who had moved his family to Paris to set up a studio. The family returned to Holland in 1874 and settled in the Hague. Artz was taught art by his father and at the age of 12 enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He also received tuition from Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) who had an influence on his subject matter. He married Johanna Sophia Cecilia Ginjoolen at the Hague on 5 July, 1893. One of the witnesses was the artist Tony Offermans (1854-1911) whom he was apprenticed to at his studio. The couple went on to have two children together and to supplement his income, Artz also worked as an art teacher. One of his pupils was Leendert Scheltema (1876-1966). After divorcing from his first wife in 1915, he married Lucie Sophie van der Hoeven in 1917. At some point he moved to Soestdijk, living there until 1926 when he relocated to Katwijk at Sea in. He returned to Soestdijk in 1931 where he died on 23 February, 1951. Like his father, Artz was fascinated by nature and after painting a series of landscapes and seascapes began producing scenes featuring ducks and waterfowl usually on or by lakes and rivers. He was an expert at painting the play of light upon water and also preferred to work with smaller canvasses. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum. Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine...
