A small and engaging animal composition , painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.
This painting features a black longhorn cow standing on a gently rolling green hill, set against a soft, muted sky. The cow is depicted in a side profile, with large, curved, cream-colored horns that contrast against its dark body. Its expression is simple yet calm and steady, with a single white eye that gives it a distinct and stylized character.
The folk-art style of the painting is evident in its flat, minimalistic rendering, clean lines, and restrained colour palette of earthy greens, soft blues, and warm browns.
The overall composition conveys a sense of peace and rural charm, celebrating the beauty and dignity of farm animals in nature.
This oil is painted onto panel which although unframed, is meant to be hung as is. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.
British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
