About the Item
Nassau Blair Browne, a celebrated Dublin artist and Royal Hibernian Academy member, brings to life a serene yet striking portrayal of two hunters in a vast open landscape. This evocative piece captures the essence of Irish countryside hunting with a keen focus on the bond between the horse and the wild expanse they navigate. Browne’s meticulous attention to detail and mastery of light and texture creates a vivid, immersive atmosphere, blending the figures with their natural surroundings.
Browne studied at the Slade in London and at a school of animal painting in Midhurst, Sussex. His work was included in the London Guildhall exhibition of Irish Art, which Hugh Lane organised in 1904. Browne was secretary of the RHA 1911-24 and governor of the NGI 1918-24; his administrative duties ended when he moved to England in 1924. However, he continued to send exhibits to the RHA. His stylised landscapes, though essentially academic, reveal traces of an art nouveau aesthetic.

Pair of 19th Century British Equestrian Oil Paintings
Located in London, GB
Pair of 19th century British equestrian oil paintings
British, 19th Century
Boards: Height 25cm, width 32cm
Frames: Height 35cm, width 42cm, depth 4cm
This attractive pair of 19th-century oil paintings beautifully captures the elegance and charm of Victorian sporting art. Rendered with fine detail and vibrant hues, the paintings are enhanced by their original wooden frames and equal dimensions, making them ideal for display as a complementary set.
Each artwork features a 19th-century racehorse alongside its jockey, portrayed with striking use of colour and a keen eye for character. In the first composition, a chestnut horse is shown being led across an open landscape by a gentleman in stylish rural dress, likely the owner. The jockey, seated confidently atop the animal, wears vivid blue silks. The lower right corner bears a faint signature, and the reverse of the canvas includes indistinct handwritten text, presumably of the horse’s name.
The second painting shows another similarly hued racehorse, this time in profile, with its jockey dressed in bold yellow silks and a burgundy riding cap. The back of this canvas is clearly marked with the name ‘Red Robin’.
Rich in colour and full of period charm, this matched pair of antique equestrian paintings would appeal to collectors of horse racing...
