About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Brown Cow by Paul Jansen radiates simplicity and serenity, focusing on the peaceful gaze of a cow as it stands against a clear, muted sky. The soft brown tones of the cow’s fur create a gentle warmth that contrasts beautifully with the cool, neutral backdrop, while the delicate details of the cow’s features—its calm eyes and soft fur—invite the viewer into a quiet moment of reflection. The cow’s expression, tranquil and composed, captures the essence of pastoral calm. Jansen’s attention to texture and form brings out the natural beauty of the animal, while the understated color palette enhances the sense of peace that the cow exudes. The gentle tilt of the head and the soft, earthy tones of its coat give the painting a feeling of groundedness, connecting the viewer to the quiet rhythms of rural life. "Brown Cow" celebrates the grace and beauty of nature in its most unassuming form. This artwork is available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art, Chelsea, and online, offering an opportunity to bring a touch of pastoral calm and elegance into any space. Artist biography: Paul Jansen (1960) was born in Groningen, The Netherlands, and studied at the renowned Minerva Academy in his hometown. Initially beginning his artistic career as a photographer, the influence of photography remains evident in his paintings today, particularly in the unconventional compositions and extreme framing of his works. This is especially notable in his distinctive cow portraits, which have become a central theme in Jansen’s art. For many years, the cow has been one of Jansen’s primary sources of inspiration. He is fascinated by the earthy, curious nature of these animals and captivated by their unique, often absurd forms and unpretentious presence. Unlike traditional livestock painters of past centuries, who often placed cattle in the background to enhance the landscape, Jansen brings the cow to the forefront. In his work, the landscape fades into insignificance or vanishes entirely, allowing the cow to take center stage. The result is an intimate and engaging portrayal where the cow’s presence dominates, often filling the frame so completely that the animal almost seems to reach out beyond it. Some of his portraits even verge on the abstract, as Jansen uses color and flattened forms to emphasize the cow’s essence. Jansen paints the cow as an individual with its own soul and distinct personality. His use of dark tones in the animal's coat and the backgrounds contrasts strikingly with details such as the light pink of a cow’s nose, creating a powerful visual dynamic. His work masterfully balances naturalism with abstraction, employing colors and forms to express the core identity of the cow. The textured, tactile quality of his paintings further enhances this, as Jansen works with oil paint on board, building up multiple layers to achieve rich, deep tones. His cows, often depicted in a variety of black and white hues, feature the animal's expressive eyes and wet nose as the central focal points. Paul Jansen’s work is represented in several prominent figurative galleries across the Netherlands, and his paintings are part of numerous private and corporate collections worldwide. Feeding a Calf Lovely Farm Scene with Redhead Girl mid 19th Century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
As we gaze upon this artwork, we are immediately struck by the warmth and tenderness exuding from the scene. The woman, with a gentle smile on her face, carefully feeds the pet calf, while the redhead girl, her eyes sparkling with excitement, reaches out to touch the adorable creature. The artist's attention to detail is impeccable, with each brushstroke conveying a sense of life and movement to the painting. Nevertheless, the beauty of this painting lies not only in its technical prowess but also in the emotions it evokes. Visual research gets us to authorship of Walter Goodall (1830 - 1889) an British painter. But since the painting is not signed apparently – it is hard to state for sure. Antique oil painting on canvas with stamp for 'Brodie & Middleton, 79 Long Acre...
