About the Item
Prehistoric artists decorated their caves in similar colours to those we use today: yellow ochre and burnt sienna, both natural earth pigments. Penny recreates prehistory by using the same techniques to design her painting.

Penny Rumble
We are pleased to sell works on behalf of Penny Rumble. Penny is an artist based in Cornwall in the far South West of England. Her love for the sea is evident in her work.Penny is a keen Wild Swimmer and many of her seascapes are painted from this special perspective, this viewpoint imparts a different way of seeing the Atlantic Ocean. In her own words “I can’t help it – I love the sea. Inspiration hits immediately I’m near it. I suppose it’s the power of nature which impresses me most. As an island nation we’re obsessed by the weather which is not surprising because when we are confronted by its extremes we are humbled”. Initially working at speed to capture the immediacy of the scene Penny then returns to her studio where the process of translating the initial impression to the finished work begins. It can take many months of applying layers of oil paint to the canvas or board and developing a relationship with the work before she’s happy with her endeavours and the piece is complete.

Note:
We are grateful to Mr Fred Meijer for his attribution to Ludolf de Jongh
Ludolf de Jongh was the son of a shoemaker. When his father moved to Rotterdam, the young Ludolf decided to learn art rather than shoemaking and became a pupil of Cornelis Saftleven. Later he studied under Anthony Palamedes in Delft and still later with Jan van Bijlert in Utrecht.
In 1635 he travelled to France with Francis Bacon. Seven years later, in 1642, he returned to the Netherlands when he heard that his mother had fallen ill. He set up a shop in Rotterdam, and his earliest signed paintings date from that year.
According to Houbraken, his travels had caused him to speak French so fluently, that his parents had to learn French in order to speak with him.
De Jongh’s work shows a strong influence from the Utrecht school of Caravaggio admirers, especially Jacob Duck...

Cape Maneuver bullfighter oil painting
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Cape Maneuver
Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 – 1986)
Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board
Dimensions: 19.7 x 23.6 in (50 x 60 cm)
Date: Circa 1980s
Signature: Signed "Tuser" in the lower left corner
Condition: Excellent; thick, vibrant brushwork and vivid colors well preserved.
📝 Description
This painting captures a dramatic moment in the bullfight — the classic verónica — as the matador gracefully halts the bull’s charge with a sweeping motion of the cape. The vivid contrast of magentas, blues, and golds intensifies the theatrical tension between man and beast. The composition is dynamic yet controlled, emphasizing the poise of the torero against the raw force of the bull.
The expressive brushstrokes and thick impasto enhance the sense of movement, while the abstracted background ensures focus remains on the central figures. The piece is a striking blend of figuration and emotional energy, characteristic of Tuser’s taurine works.
