"The Shepherd's Dog"

About the Item

Richard Ansdell (1815-1885) 'The Shepherd's Dog' Signed with monogram and dated '18.RA.60' lower right Oil on canvas Canvas Size - 30 x 71 in Framed Size - 35 x 77 in Provenance Sale, Dreweatt's Newbury, 7th October 1998, Lot 200; The Collection of Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. Richard Ansdell was a British artist known for his detailed and dramatic animal paintings, particularly those featuring rural and pastoral themes. The Shepherd’s Dog exemplifies his ability to capture the emotional depth and loyalty of working animals. In this painting, a large black-and-white sheepdog rests on a shepherd’s coat and saddle, gazing into the distance with a solemn, almost melancholic expression. The composition evokes a sense of duty and patience, emphasizing the essential role of such dogs in guarding and herding livestock. The background features a rugged landscape with grazing sheep, reinforcing the pastoral theme. The soft, warm light of the sky suggests either dawn or dusk, adding to the contemplative mood of the scene. Ansdell's masterful use of texture, particularly in rendering the dog’s fur and the folds of the coat, enhances the realism and emotional depth of the piece. This work is a testament to the bond between shepherds and their loyal canine companions, celebrating the tireless dedication of working dogs in rural life.

The sheep and her two lambs are depicted against the backdrop of the sea with shipping and chalk cliffs in the distance. The location is likely to be the Devon coast, an area Jones visited often. Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
