Richard Ansdell was a British artist known for his detailed and dramatic animal paintings, particularly those featuring rural and pastoral themes. The Shepherd’s Dog exemplifies his ability to capture the emotional depth and loyalty of working animals.
In this painting, a large black-and-white sheepdog rests on a shepherd’s coat and saddle, gazing into the distance with a solemn, almost melancholic expression. The composition evokes a sense of duty and patience, emphasizing the essential role of such dogs in guarding and herding livestock. The background features a rugged landscape with grazing sheep, reinforcing the pastoral theme. The soft, warm light of the sky suggests either dawn or dusk, adding to the contemplative mood of the scene.
Ansdell's masterful use of texture, particularly in rendering the dog’s fur and the folds of the coat, enhances the realism and emotional depth of the piece. This work is a testament to the bond between shepherds and their loyal canine companions, celebrating the tireless dedication of working dogs in rural life.

Richard Ansdell
Richard Ansdell was an English oil painter of animals and lansdcapes. Born in Liverpool in 1815, he displayed a natural talent for art from an early age. After school he studied under a portrait painter in Chatham, Kent. He first exhibited at The Liverpool Academy in 1835 and went on to Study there a year later. By this time Ansdell had invited the interest of a number of wealthy patrons and went on to his first Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 1840 with two paintings, one entitled "Grouse Shooting", and exhibited there every year for the next decade. He also painted in Spain and France and in 1855 at the Paris Exhibition he was awarded the Gold Medal for his works, He became an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1861 and a Royal Academician (RA) in 1870. He resided in the Lancashire Borough of Flyde, where the district of Ansdell is named after him, the only English artist to have been honored in this way. Ansdell's work was very sought after in his own lifetime, his desirability has continued and his auction record for a large work is about $910,000 achieved in 2006 at Sotheby's.

The Collection of Charlie Watts.
Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822–1891) was a British equestrian and sporting artist, and the son of the acclaimed Leicestershire painter John Ferneley Sr., one of the leading figures in 19th-century English horse painting. Continuing the family tradition, Claude developed a refined skill in depicting horses, hunts, and rural scenes, often drawing from the vibrant sporting life of the English countryside.
Although he lived somewhat in the shadow of his more famous father, Claude Lorraine Ferneley maintained a solid reputation among country patrons for his ability to portray horses with anatomical accuracy and spirited realism. His paintings often captured the energy of the hunt and the elegance of equestrian portraiture, appealing to a clientele that prized their animals as both companions and status symbols.
His work is noted for its clarity, control, and fidelity to the traditions of British sporting art, and today, Claude Ferneley is recognized as an accomplished artist in his own right, contributing to the enduring legacy of the Ferneley name in English equestrian painting.
