About the Item

A beautiful signed and dated 1880 oil on canvas portrait of a terrier sitting on a chair, by Rupert Arthur Dent. Excellent quality work by this noted Victorian animal painter. Signed and dated lower right and presented in a gold frame. Artist: Rupert Arthur Dent (English, 1853-1910) Title: Terrier on a Chair Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 21 x 24 inches (53.5 x 61 cm) including the frame Rupert Arthur Dent was born in Wolverhampton in 1853, son of a Stafford solicitor, William Dent, and his wife Jane. In 1861 the family included nine children who had a governess, Miss Jane Besemeres. Rupert Dent was deaf from birth, and his obituary (British Deaf Times 1910 Vol.7 p.57-9) tells us that one of his father’s sister’s was also deaf and very artistic. As early as eight years old he showed artistic talent, observing and drawing animals. Perhaps the governess was just for the daughters or the younger children as we are told that Arthur was educated at the Old Trafford (Manchester) Institution under Alexander Patterson, then Wolverhampton School of Art. Aged 23 he became a Royal Academy student and began exhibiting. The Royal Academy was not appreciative of animal paintings but his artistic treatment and naturalism was recognised as having great merit. Fond of history and interested in antiquities, Dent was also philanthropic, holding a Sunday afternoon class for Deaf people in Wolverhampton. His forte was clearly his dog painting, but he also painted miniatures and landscapes. In February 2012 one of his paintings was sold for $4,750 in New York.

English Late 19th Century Vertical Oil Painting of a Dog Sitting in an Armchair
Located in Atlanta, GA
An English late 19th century oil painting of a dog sitting in an armchair with red cushion in giltwood frame. This exquisite animal painting features a short hair caramel colored dog, majestically sitting in a chair, in a manner reminiscent of Velasquez' depiction of Pope Innocent X. A red cushion, whose deep tones contrast beautifully with the dog's coat, assures us that the dog is very comfortable! Dog portraits became popular during the 18th century among the hunting aristocracy, and the establishment of The Kennel Club in 1873, further encouraged their popularity. This portrait is a perfect example of this trend. Set inside a lovely giltwood frame, this vertical format English dog portrait...
