About the Item
This intimate and powerful painting by Sarah Aspinall presents a close‑up portrait of a horse’s head, rendered with anatomical accuracy and sensitive detail. The horse is shown in three-quarter view, ears alert, jawline and cheek muscles diligently modeled. The artist’s adept understanding of equine structure is combined with painterly grace: fine brushwork defines the mane and softer tonal transitions capture the sheen of the coat and the light reflected in the eye.
Aspinall uses a neutral, atmospheric background—likely a muted grey or soft gradient—to maintain strict focus on the horse’s features. The warm browns and gentle highlights enhance the depicted volume, while brushwork remains precise and controlled.
Sarah Aspinall is a British painter born in 1965 and widely recognized for her dynamic and anatomically precise equestrian portraits Sarah Aspinall Creates.
After earning a fine art degree at Saint Martin’s in London, she pursued further study in Rome, where she mastered Old Master oil painting techniques, including the use of resin-based glazes and layered varnishing—methods that give her oils depth and luminous color.
Her breakthrough came in 1995, when the Italian Jockey Club commissioned her to paint the Derby-winning horse Luso—a commission that brought her back to her British racing roots and established her as one of the foremost equestrian artists in the UK.
She works primarily by commission but also regularly exhibits at the Osborne Studio Gallery in London.
Her auction record includes notable pieces like Gallileo, Head Studies, sold at Christie’s South Kensington in 2008.
