About the Item

This charming composition features two King Charles Spaniels, depicted with Landseer’s characteristic sensitivity and attention to detail. The painting shows the dogs resting in a richly appointed interior setting, likely a drawing room or study, reflecting the refined and aristocratic associations of the breed. The two spaniels are the central focus: One reclines comfortably on a velvet-covered footstool, its paws draped over the edge, head turned to face the viewer with soulful, expressive eyes. The other stands beside the stool, alert and slightly raised, as though responding to a distant sound or awaiting its master’s return. Its coat is glossier and more lively, suggesting a more spirited temperament. The dogs are of the Blenheim and tricolor varieties, with their long, silky coats painted in luscious detail — flowing ears, feathery tails, and soft underbellies rendered with delicate brushwork. Behind them is a sumptuous interior backdrop: drapery, a carved table leg, or part of a richly upholstered armchair might be visible, hinting at a domestic setting of privilege and taste. The background remains subdued to keep focus on the dogs. A small cavalier’s helmet or feathered hat lies nearby, likely symbolic — evoking both the breed’s historic name and their traditional association with royalty and the court of King Charles II. The palette is warm and earthy, with rich browns, deep reds, and creamy whites contributing to the luxurious feel. Landseer’s typical anthropomorphic touch is present: the dogs appear not just as animals but as beloved companions with distinct personalities — intelligent, devoted, slightly pampered. Although this version is titled "After Landseer", indicating it’s a copy or homage, it still attempts to capture his unique blend of realism and sentimentality. King Charles Spaniels were favored by the aristocracy, particularly during the Restoration period in England, and this painting plays on that legacy — portraying them not only as pets, but as near-regal figures in their own right. Landseer, who frequently worked with royal and noble patrons, often emphasized the loyalty, gentility, and charm of such animals, aligning them with the values of their human companions.

English 19th century portrait of two seated King Charles Cavalier Spaniels dogs
By James Cassie
Located in Woodbury, CT
James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...
