40”x60” watercolor on paper, signed on reverse. A contemporary surrealist still-life with animals from the forest, this large-scale watercolor brings nature into a domestic setting.
This large scale watercolor by New York artist, Thomas Broadbent, is painted with a naturalist style, yet has a surreal quality in the combination of elements presented. Nature has crept into a living room setting with a young buck resting with woodland animals. The scene depicts a yearling deer with young antlers, laying amongst sticks and leaves from the forest on a modernist white couch. Materials from the wilderness, such as sticks, leaves and rounded river stones are piled atop and around the sofa. Artist’s painting stretcher bars are nestled among the sticks and branches laid next to the young deer. Small birds perch along the woodland elements. A falcon sits on the back of the couch, while a quail strides in front of the composition. This is a masterfully painted scene, and Broadbent's use of light, texture and detail is impeccable.
Broadbent has shown extensively throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Broadbent’s work won the Pulse Prize for best solo booth at New York's Pulse Art Fair. His work was subsequently featured in “Mission to Space” at the Children’s Art Museum in Manhattan. Broadbent’s numerous solo exhibitions include the Visual Art’s Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Gallery (Gent, Belgium) Voorkamer Gallery (Lier, Belgium) Inspace gallery (Beijing, China) and the Newark Arts Council. Broadbent’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Jersey Star-Ledger, NY Arts, The Brooklyn Rail and numerous other publications.
