W. Hardy
The staunch Royalist - a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

1930

About the Item

W. Hardy, circa 1930 The staunch Royalist - a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel oil on canvas 16 x 22 1/4 in. (40.7 x 56.5 cm.) with frame 20 ½ x 27 in. (52.1 x 68.6 cm.) In this charming portrait of a spaniel, Hardy has depicted this spaniel with a curtain embroidered with a crown and Royal symbolism, a portrait of King Charles II holding a spaniel, and roses, which symbolise the union of the Houses of Lancaster and York. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel traces its origins to the toy spaniels popular in 16th and 17th century Europe, particularly in the court of King Charles II of England, who was so fond of them they were often seen at his side. His supporters were known as Cavaliers, which became associated with the spaniels.
