Painter active in Florence in the late 17th century Antonio Domenico Gabbiani (Florence 1652 - 1726) attributable to Portrait of a nobleman with heraldic coat of arms (I / II) Oil on canvas, 90 x 74 cm. Framed 109 x 94 We are pleased to present this beautiful "Portrait of a gentleman" (whose pendant is available) which depicts a member of a family of noble rank, presumably Florentine but it is not excluded that it may be a family of French origin, as can be inferred from the sumptuous elegant clothing, and the complex coat of arms that stands out in the upper part of the painting (above the shield the cross of the Knight of the Holy Sepulcher). In the painting you can appreciate the details of the garments, with finely finished lace and the precious velvet of the cloak, the rich drapery of the dress, enhanced by the contrast of the intense green with the golden threads of the embroidery, which define a motif similar to a lily . The pleasant conduction that characterizes the refined stroke is appreciated, finally, in the ability to make the light flow on the clothes and of course on the rendering of the features of the face of the portrayed. The careful psychological investigation proposes a man's face with a calm but proud expression, in the gaze he turns to the viewer. The work, attributable to the Florentine pictorial environment of the last part of the seventeenth century, condenses the stylistic characteristics typical of the painter Antonio Domenico Gabbiani (Florence 1652 - 1726), celebrated portraitist of the Medici court who could boast Cosimo III and Prince Ferdinando among the its main protectors and patrons. He portrayed the members of the Florentine aristocracy, giving their characters the psychological and investigative aspect, as well as in the refinement of the features and the vibrant pictorial stroke. The chromatic range is balanced and refined. The painting is all played on the different shades of browns, illuminated by the delicate whites of the shirt and the green of the lining of the dress. Pupil of Sustermans and Vincenzo Dandini, he became one of the most sought after painters in the city. His stays in Rome and then in Venice, at the studio of the painter Sebastiano Bombelli, made him perfect his already appreciated skills as a portraitist. Alongside the official portraits of Vittoria Della Rovere, Prince Ferdinando de’Medici and his sister, Anna Maria Luisa (now in Pitti), he painted a very large number of works for the secondary members of the family, becoming the official painter of the Medici court.
