About the Item
Cover of The Saturday Evening Post, April 23, 1960.
The Post described, "'Here's the pitch, Snider connects! It's a pop foul heading in the direction of the third-base stands. Mathews is reaching for it. He's...' Better luck next time, Mathews, but a fellow has to put up with that sort of thing on Ladies' Day. Artist Dick Sargent insists that No. 21 is Milwaukee's Eddie Mathews and that he's trying to retrieve a ball hit by Duke Snider of Los Angeles. If the resemblance is slight, that's because Sargent changed Eddie's number from 41 to 21, doctored his uniform and put him in Yankee Stadium, where the National League Braves don't often play. Incidentally, we did a little checking and discovered that some 1400 foul balls are knocked into the Yankee Stadium stands every season. It's hard to say how many are snagged by red-gloved ladies." (The Saturday Evening Post, April 23, 1960, p. 3)
