About the Item

Young girl with rose tree. Oil on cardboard. Signed and situated 'Wien' Eduard Veith, son of the room painter Julius Veith (1820-1887) and his wife Susanna Veith born. Schleif (1827-1883) was a pupil of Ferdinand Laufberger at the k.k. Arts and Crafts School of the k.k. Austrian Museum of Arts and Industry and completed his education in Paris. Study trips took him to Italy, Belgium and Tunis. From 1890 Veith was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, later he also taught at the School of Applied Arts of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry and in 1920 was appointed Full Professor. In 1896 he received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin. Since 1911 he was with Bertha Griesbeck (* 1872 in Augsburg, † 1952 in Vienna) married. His honorary grave on the Döblinger cemetery (group 32, row 1, no. 11) was designed by the sculptor Georg Leisek.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent.
