Edward Rice
"Dormer Mansard Roof" - Architectural Painting - Contemporary Realism

2010

$38,000

About

Edward Rice is inspired by the work of Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler, Lucian Freud and Georgio de Chirico. "Dormer Mansard Roof" is a large scale painting depicting a Dormer style window and Mansard style roof. The earliest known example of a mansard roof is credited to Pierre Lescot on part of the Louvre built around 1550. This roof design was popularized in the early 17th century by François Mansart (1598–1666), an accomplished architect of the French Baroque period Ed Rice meticulously executes and produces realist paintings of buildings great and small. Continuing his exploration of architectural details, this painting's dramatic perspective and bold use of a minimal palette including peach, beige, and blue create a world that is distilled, quiet and clean. Rice's paintings are bathed in glorious light, under cloudless skies, away from the hectic pace of modern life. Born in 1953, Edward Rice's work is in the permanent collections of the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, South Carolina; the Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina; the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia; the Greenville County Museum of Art, South Carolina; the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, Georgia; the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Georgia; and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, Louisiana.
