About the Item

Newnham on Severn is an Original Painting by Eleanor Woolley. Painted Plein Air this painting depicts Newnham from the banks of the River Severn at Broadoak. The day is wintry but sunny, a light haze makes the grey tones appear more vivid. The use of a palette knife gives the painting a richly textured surface, creating a dappled surface to the water's surface. The bend in the river curves through the painting leading our eye to the village of Newnham and beyond. Interior images thanks to Wuttichai, and Vanitjan of Freepik. Her first true love for painting came from an inspirational Art teacher at Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls where she started painting in Oils at thirteen years old. Here she learnt to paint using classic oil painting techniques, and was drawn to the figure from early life drawing lessons. During this period she was fortunate enough to work under Mary Fedden in her studio and with Portrait Sculptor Peter Lambda with whom she further developed her technique and composition. After gaining her BA Hons in Sculpture at Leeds University Eleanor travelled for some time in Asia before coming home to study Furniture making. Eleanor worked as a Cabinet maker and a Restorer before returning to Fine Art painting. Eleanor’s inspiration is taken from her surroundings where she has a love for the every day things, often passed by without a second thought. Eleanor’s paintings are vibrant, often painted Plein air and finished in the studio. Starting with bold outlines, many layers of paint are used to create the depth of colour. Her paintings are spontaneous, using washes of oil to create the desired form. Often finishing with a palette knife producing a pleasing texture. Her current work is inspired by the landscape of the Cotswolds, and contrasted with long shadows created by figures in urban landscapes.

Helen Taylor (Contemporary) The Lost Day Signed with monogram, inscribed with title verso Oil on board 5 x 5 inches without frame 6 x 6 inches with frame Helen Taylor’s practice follows an interest in belonging, connection, and journeys. She spent her formative years in the Middle East, relocating to England at the age of 16, to attend Hampstead Fine Arts College, London. Growing up in a desert manifested a yearning for a ‘greening’ of landscape and garden. Moving to the relative flatness and sandy lanes of Suffolk provided comfort, fuel for the imagination and ultimately home – an outsider looking in but also residing within. Taylor works partially en plein air, in part from sketches and memory. The works are enveloped in an instinctive, gestural immediacy and equally, are concerned with the graphic, expressive potential of colour. Balancing a romantic impulse with simplification of form, imperfections of application and rawness of material, the paintings are rendered in a loose, textured style. Taylor seeks to reinvigorate traditions of figurative painting and provide the viewer with a shared personal encounter. In 2001, Taylor presented her paintings to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her work is held in private collections internationally. She has lived in East Anglia for 27 years.
