About the Item

Walking out from Newnham is an Original Painting by Eleanor Woolley. Painted Plein air on a January afternoon, it shows the view towards Broadoak and beyond to Westbury on Severn. The Church spire can just be made out, whilst the bend in the river is in full view, and impressions of houses are dappled along the bank. It is an atmospheric cold day, the sky and clouds are reflected in the water showing the faintest blue. The brushstrokes are lively, giving an energy to the painting. Her first true love for painting came from an inspirational Art teacher at Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls where she started painting in Oils at thirteen years old. Here she learnt to paint using classic oil painting techniques, and was drawn to the figure from early life drawing lessons. During this period she was fortunate enough to work under Mary Fedden in her studio and with Portrait Sculptor Peter Lambda with whom she further developed her technique and composition. After gaining her BA Hons in Sculpture at Leeds University Eleanor travelled for some time in Asia before coming home to study Furniture making. Eleanor worked as a Cabinet maker and a Restorer before returning to Fine Art painting. Eleanor’s inspiration is taken from her surroundings where she has a love for the every day things, often passed by without a second thought. Eleanor’s paintings are vibrant, often painted Plein air and finished in the studio. Starting with bold outlines, many layers of paint are used to create the depth of colour. Her paintings are spontaneous, using washes of oil to create the desired form. Often finishing with a palette knife producing a pleasing texture.

Helen Taylor (Contemporary) A Short Walk to Europe Signed with monogram, inscribed with title verso Oil on board 5 x 5 inches without frame 6 x 6 inches with frame Helen Taylor’s practice follows an interest in belonging, connection, and journeys. She spent her formative years in the Middle East, relocating to England at the age of 16, to attend Hampstead Fine Arts College, London. Growing up in a desert manifested a yearning for a ‘greening’ of landscape and garden. Moving to the relative flatness and sandy lanes of Suffolk provided comfort, fuel for the imagination and ultimately home – an outsider looking in but also residing within. Taylor works partially en plein air, in part from sketches and memory. The works are enveloped in an instinctive, gestural immediacy and equally, are concerned with the graphic, expressive potential of colour. Balancing a romantic impulse with simplification of form, imperfections of application and rawness of material, the paintings are rendered in a loose, textured style. Taylor seeks to reinvigorate traditions of figurative painting and provide the viewer with a shared personal encounter. In 2001, Taylor presented her paintings to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her work is held in private collections internationally. She has lived in East Anglia for 27 years. A New Beginning
Located in Greenwich, CT
Elizabeth Higgins Biography b. 1960 Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design that drives her work. Higgins’ paintings are rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, and the Canadian Group of Seven (also known as the Algonquin School of landscape painters, 1920–1933). She is influenced by the work of her artist-teachers Paul Resika—himself a student of Hans Hofmann—and Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), as well as the paintings of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum. It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting—of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…” Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena Rubenstein...
