About the Item

Measurements Painting 19 x 12 inches Framed 24.5 x 17.5 inches Ellen Frances Burpee Farr (1840–1907) was a pioneering American woman painter known for her detailed floral and botanical works of remarkable precision and depth. She was originally from New Hampshire and later moved to California, where she became known for capturing the region’s lush plant life in her paintings. Farr’s work often features delicate, naturalistic depictions of flowers, leaves, and cascading vines, emphasizing intricate details and vibrant colors. This botanical composition of the pepper tree, a ubiquitous and beloved feature of the California landscape, is most associated with her work, and features pink and red berries surrounded by delicate fern-like leaves. The style aligns with Farr’s focus on nature, showing careful attention to color and texture. The antique carved wood frame is covered in 23k gold. She was married to Evarts Farr, a politician and Civil War officer, and after his passing, she relocated to Pasadena, California. There, she became part of the growing artistic community, painting scenes inspired by the region’s lush gardens and landscapes. Farr's work is often characterized by realistic detail, soft yet vibrant color palettes, and an appreciation for nature’s intricate beauty. This painting is a fine example of Farr’s botanical focus. The cascading branches are Schinus molle (commonly known as the Peruvian pepper tree), which is common in California and produces distinctive pinkish-red berries. The fern-like leaves add an intricate texture, and the background features a soft sky-like gradient, creating a sense of depth. Farr’s meticulous brushwork and use of shading make the berries and leaves appear almost three-dimensional, demonstrating her skill in realism. A lovely small work that would fit in many different areas of a home, especially in an intimate setting such as a bedroom. This painting has been professionally cleaned and restored.

Undersea Coral Caverns, Tahiti
By Zarh Pritchard
Located in Spokane, WA
Measurement Painting 23.5 x 14.5 inches Framed 30 x 21.125 inches Zarh Pritchard (1866–1956) was an artist known for his ethereal and atmospheric paintings, particularly of underwater scenes, which he actually painted underwater in what is now considered primitive diving gear or early scuba diving equipment. His work often depicted dreamlike, almost mystical landscapes with a soft, hazy quality. This painting of coral caverns showcases a delicate, misty effect of gorgeous pastel colors, which aligns with Pritchard’s style. He used a diving helmet and gear to actually paint underwater on leather, creating the most unusual and evocative impressionist paintings, unparalleled in art history. This painting retains a hand made wood frame covered in 23k gold by famed Los Angeles framer...

Trees
By Max Karp
Located in Columbia, MO
Trees Kiln-fired enamel 4.5" h x 3.5" w 9" h x 8.5" (framed) Max Karp is widely recognized as the chief innovator of modern enameling. Self-taught and driven, over the years he perfected a unique process which allowed for his creation of museum-quality, kiln-fired two-dimensional painting. Karp was born in Ohio in 1916 but raised in California. He began painting as a child by depicting various species of birds and insects for his father who was an ornithologist and entomologist. In the mid-1960's, Karp became interested in the enamel process. Over the last half century, his paintings have received critical recognition and in 1970 Hamilton Mint commissioned Karp to produce paintings of the four seasons of the year, which were then issued as a limited edition of plates on precious metal. In 1980 Karp's enamel portrait of Beverly Sills, the American Queen of Opera, was presented to the singer following her final performance. His work is included in numerous private collections including those of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Margaretta “Happy" Rockefeller, and Sarah Churchill...
