About the Item
Spinning Joy” is a vibrant fabric collage painting that captures the pure, unfiltered delight of childhood. At the heart of the piece is a young child, adorned in a colorful patchwork of patterns, fully immersed in the playful act of spinning a large tire. With one foot off the ground and arms outstretched, the child's movement embodies freedom, curiosity, and the innocent thrill of discovery.
Each element in the collage—from the floral-patterned ground to the sky bursting with daisies and blue blossoms—creates a lively, textured world that mirrors the boundless imagination of children. The use of diverse African prints and textiles brings cultural depth and storytelling into the composition, celebrating identity and tradition through visual rhythm.
"Spinning Joy" is not just a depiction of play; it is a celebration of life’s simple pleasures.
It reminds us that happiness is often found in the moments we least expect—in a tire, a
field of flowers, or the laughter of a child lost in motion. This work invites viewers to
reconnect with their memories of joy, spontaneity, and freedom.

About Artist
Agwunwa Theophilus Chinonso was born in 1990. He hails from Ejeme Aniorgor, Aniocha South, Delta State, Nigeria. He graduated with a distinction from Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi in Edo State, where he studied Arts and Industrial Design (Painting). His works are an exploration of numerous waste materials, most especially fabric, in the execution of his paintings. He doesn’t simply conceptualize daily activities and the human state of mind in his paintings; he transforms waste materials into wealth (beautiful works of art).
At a tender age, he discovered his gift as an artist, both visual and performing arts, drawing almost everything he saw around his environment and practising musical instruments as well.
Artist Statement
As a Nigerian-based artist, I see my art as a form of up-cycling because I transform Ankara fabrics (African prints), both old and new, into beautiful paintings that portray daily activities, love, and a human state of mind. The use of colourful Ankara materials with lovely motifs and patterns characterizes my unique style.
Ankara fabric was chosen as my primary medium of expression because of the lovely patterns on it and how it captures the essence of my work. The use of vibrant colours of fabrics in my painting depicts hope as it tends to encourage the viewers to stay focused, and that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
