About the Item

Alejandro Casanova (Spanish artist) Were We Find Refuge 150 x 150 cm Oil paint on canvas The canvas of this painting will be rolled and shipped in a tube. Alejandro (Ale) Casanova was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1981. In the capital of Turia, he studied Fine Arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he stood out for his brilliant academic record. After completing his bachelor's degree, he moved to Tenerife, where he continued his doctoral studies and obtained the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA). He has also received various national and European research grants, as well as several scholarships for visual arts. His first solo exhibition took place in 2005 in Valencia, at the age of 24, and since then he has continued to participate in both individual and group projects, for which he has received numerous awards and distinctions. ARTIST STATEMENT Here, the artist talks about his work, inspiration, and motives. In my work, simple scenes are depicted with absolute naturalness and rawness through figures and portraits. This NATURALNESS and the idea of going beyond the field where we know nothing is my way of EVOKING FEELINGS in the viewer, making them question the reason behind the scene, reconstruct the scene, reimagine possible events, and even give continuity to it beyond the sequence. Through the figures and portraits, I seek an atmosphere of intimacy in my paintings. The portrayal of scenes through the human figure and nudity is, for me, the simplest way to engage the viewer. My intention is to make the images affect and shake the viewer, through figures placed in the center of the painting, almost symmetrically, where their most personal moments are observed. In this way, we act as voyeurs, but without a dirty, lascivious, or obscene gaze. My work features oil paint and watercolor as main elements, as well as social media. I use them with the same intent, relevance, structure, and form. In my work, we see my tendency to use color, from the dullest and most muted tones to the most saturated and contrasting colors. Color is transformed into a game, where the brightness of the hue becomes the fundamental axis. The work on the painting is done with direct and precise brushstrokes, combining subtle gradients with the cuts of the brushstrokes.
