About the Item

Magnificent old master painting depicting a harvest celebration in a picturesque 17th century village. The painting radiates peacefulness and tranquility with its earthy colours, blue sky and wonderful details. Alexander van Bredael (Antwerp 1663 – 1720) was a distinguished Flemish Baroque painter celebrated for his lively genre scenes, festive processions, and landscapes with joyful scenes. Born in Antwerp into a prominent family of artists, he was the son of Peeter van Bredael, a successful painter of market and village scenes, and Anna Maria Veldener, daughter of the sculptor Jennyn Veldener. This rich artistic heritage shaped his early development and lifelong dedication to painting. Van Bredael became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1685, the same year he married Cornelia Sporckmans, daughter of the history painter Hubert Sporckmans. One of their sons, Jan Frans van Bredael, followed in his footsteps as a painter. In addition to his family, Alexander trained several pupils, ensuring the continuation of his dynamic style and narrative approach to art. His work is noted for its spirited depictions of Flemish life, including cattle markets, fairs, ice scenes, and theatrical performances, all rendered with remarkable clarity, movement, and warmth. He also created Italianate landscapes and harbor scenes, often infused with classical ruins and imaginative architecture. In 1698, van Bredael designed a series of tapestry cartoons for the Oudenaarde workshops, further showcasing his versatility and influence in decorative arts. Today, his paintings are housed in major European collections, including the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, the Bowes Museum in the UK, and the Bavarian State Painting Collections. His work remains highly collectible for its charm, rich detail, and historical insight into 17th-century Flemish culture. Dimensions: Oil on canvas ca. 69*84 cm With frame ca. 83*98 cm Signed lower left.
