About the Item

Amit Ambalal Untitled Mixed Media on paper 37.5cm x 56.5cm Signed and dated 1990 Provenance: Exhibition catalogue to verso for a Solo Show at Jehingir Art Gallery, Mumbai 1990 with forward by Stuart Cary Welch Amit Ambalal’s paintings provide us with a social commentary on everyday India. He calls on Indian art traditions, mixing tribal, animal, a raw line and bold colours. We are drawn to his style as we enjoy the heady mix of the traditional primitive with the modern. As with any piece of art, meaning is always with the viewer. This piece makes me smile. My Western eyes take a while to decide that I choose to see an older woman, on a vivid green chair, holding her glasses in her hand with a dog barking loudly next to her. Her stance is confident and challenging. I make a quick reference to portraits of important people, often painted sitting in a Western-style, high-back armchair. In many portraits the background normally offers reference points to a geographical place or objects a clue to who the sitter is and what they do. But in this portrait, the imagery represents a universal Indian woman, hence the blank background. The painting is not about where she comes from but about her place in society. She may be the matriarch of all she surveys. The irony appears that she may not be physically able to see but her spirit is represented by the dog who definitely still has something to say. She may be old but she is still in charge.
