About the Item
School of Andrea del Sarto (Florence, 1486 - Florence, 1530)
Saint John
Oil on panel, 57 x 39 cm
Framed, 67 x 49 cm
The panel depicts St. John, recognizable by his staff and red cloak slipping over one shoulder. The subject is silhouetted as a full-length figure against a dark background, barely pierced by the sunset revealing a mountain landscape. The saint, still a child, is caught with his body in profile while his head is turned in the direction of the viewer to seek his attention. The left arm is outstretched and grasps the staff firmly pointed at the ground, and in a kind of chiastic correspondence, the right foot is brought forward in relation to the other, as if the saint had been interrupted in his path.
The subject echoes the features of the infant Jesus in Andrea del Sarto's panel Madonna and Child with St. John in the Wallace Collection in London, varying only the position of the lower limbs.
Even the pictorial impasto-here dominated by dark, contrasting colors in contrast to the London panel played on brighter hues-refers to del Sarto, especially in the peculiar shaded effect, the master's stylistic hallmark.
Nicknamed by Vasari the "without error," Andrea d'Agnolo di Francesco di Luca di Paolo di Migliore Vannucchi (Florence, 1486 - Florence, 1530), was a master of the entire first generation of "eccentrics" (Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino in primis), but unlike his pupils he renewed the traditional repertoire in a graceful way, through the accentuation of the monumental breath of the figures, the variation of color and technique.
The London panel, as well as other Madonnas with Child by Andrea del Sarto, has been variously reproduced by other artists in his circle, but also by Domenico Puligo, an artist who was a pupil of Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio but heavily indebted to del Sarto's inventions.
Therefore, it is reasonable to argue that the author of the present is to be considered an artist related to the school of Andrea del Sarto.
