About the Item

Anthony Baus is an alumnus and instructor of the Grand Central Atelier in Long Island City, New York. His unique artistic vision, which mines the world of the Old Masters and antiquity as source material for contemporary issues, is expressed through an astonishing graphic facility derived from intense study of Italian Baroque drawing and painting. His references from to historical art are never literal; rather they are meditative and original. His impressive technique does not reflect the mind of a copyist. The Old Master-style that style Baus has embraced is his preferred language of expression, but his content is entirely personal. Baus has described it as “romantically inspired narratives created on scaffolding of ancient architecture, richly imbued with symbolism and mystery.” This pair of works began with a drawing that belonged to a series of works that reimagine view of American cities. Baus uses the historicizing architecture of these cities as setting for narrative scenes that play out in the foreground with a cast of characters dressed in a mix of contemporary and historical styles. The arch depicted here, prominently inscribed “Manhattan,” situates us with New York City, but without any specific architectural references. Baus’s drawing serves as the basis for the painting, which masterfully depicts the drawing in perspective. He presents us with a view of the drawing envisioned as a rumpled piece of paper, with the corners curling way and curling over. Anthony Baus has written of these works: “The curl paper painting series was created out of a need to re-evaluate my work and to see it from a different perspective. I first make the drawing, and then the painting as a way to distance myself from the original work and look at it as an object. It also, upon later inspection, makes the original drawing an immediate antique. The painting is an homage to the work, which at the same time celebrates the tradition of drawing. The paintings make the drawings “old” by giving them a patina that can only be achieved over time, and also by displaying them in a way similar to the paper we might find scattered on a table or displayed in a letter-rack, or rack still-life, in Dutch or Italian painting. The black background of the painting is intended to give the work a contemporary feel, as if presenting the drawing in a void.” Baus’s drawings can be savored as intricate compositions of great beauty and finesse. They are also complex and sophisticated amalgams of the modern world and ages past. However appreciated or approached, they provide an introduction to a visionary artist of earnest intent and expansive imagination.

An Architectural Capriccio with the Preaching of an Apostle
By Giovanni Paolo Panini
Located in New York, NY
Provenance: Santambrogio Antichità, Milan; sold, 2007 to: Filippo Pernisa, Milan; by whom sold, 2010, to: Private Collection, Melide, Switzerland De Primi Fine Art, Lugano, Switzerland; from whom acquired, 2011 by: Private Collection, Connecticut (2011-present) Literature: Ferdinando Arisi, “Ancora sui dipinti giovanili del Panini,” Strenna Piacentina (Piacenza, 2009): pp. 48, 57, 65, fig. 31, as by Panini Ferdinando Arisi, “Panini o Ghisolfi o Carlieri? A proposito dei dipinti giovanili,” Strenna Piacentina, (Piacenza, 2010), pp. 100, 105, 116, fig. 101, as an early work by Panini, a variant of Panini’s painting in the Museo Cristiano, Esztergom, Hungary. This architectural capriccio is one of the earliest paintings by Giovanni Paolo Panini, the preeminent painter of vedute and capricci in 18th-century Rome. The attribution to Panini has been endorsed by Ferdinando Arisi, and a recent cleaning of the painting revealed the artist’s signature in the lower right. Like many of his fellow painters working in Rome during his day, Panini was not a native of the Eternal City. He first trained as a painter and stage designer in his hometown of Piacenza and moved to Rome at the age of 20 in November 1711 to study figure painting. Panini joined the workshop of Benedetto Luti (1666-1724) and from 1712 was living on the Piazza Farnese. Panini, like many before and after him, was spellbound by Rome and its classical past. He remained in the city for the rest of his career, specializing in depicting Rome’s most important monuments, as well as creating picturesque scenes like this one that evoked the city’s ancient splendor. The 18th century art historian Lione Pascoli, who likely knew Panini personally, records in his 1730 biography of the artist that when Panini came to Rome, he was already “an excellent master and a distinguished painter of perspective, landscape, and architecture.” Panini’s earliest works from this period still show the evidence of his artistic formation in Piacenza, especially the influence of the view painter Giovanni Ghisolfi (1623-1683). However, they were also clearly shaped by his contact in Rome with the architectural capricci of Alberto Carlieri...

14th Street (Photo-Realist Oil Painting of Classic NYC Brick Building)
By Richard Britell
Located in Hudson, NY
Photo-realist oil painting of a classic brick building exterior in New York City 28 x 50 inches, oil on canvas painting Wire backing for easy hanging Unframed with white painted sides This contemporary, realistic oil painting of a New York City brick building exterior was painted by Richard Britell in 2019. Employing his mastery of the troupe l'oeil technique, Britell paints the smooth red colored stone building in extreme detail assuming a three-dimensional quality with close attention paid to shadow and perspective. This building is reminiscent of neo-classical architecture, popularized in the mid-late 1800's and the striking red exterior contrasts against the white stone window trim, further accentuating the painting's troupe l'oeil qualities. The painting on canvas is complete with wire on reverse for seamless hanging. About the artist: Richard Britell, a career painter, studied at Pratt Institute with Philip Pearlstein and Walter Erlebacher. His first show in NYC at Staempfli Gallery was sold out, and reviewed in the New York Times. Britell’s new works revolve around large, dreamy cityscapes tending toward abstraction. The artist currently lives in Pittsfield, MA.
