Feeding the Rabbit
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 13.25 inches x 11 inches
Size including frame: 20.75 inches x 18.5 inches
A wonderful genre painting of a girl feeding a rabbit by Antonio Ermolao Paoletti. A young girl is depicted wearing a red scarf on her head and holding a basket under her arm in a rustic interior. To her left, can be seen a rabbit standing on its hind legs to reach up to a leaf offered from the girl’s outstretched hand.
Antonio Ermolao Paoletti was born on 8 May 1834 in Venice, the son of Ermalao Paoletti and his wife Maria Rossi. His father was a scholar and professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and as well as publishing reference books on architecture and monuments also worked as a painter and engraver. Paoletti was taught and encouraged by his father from a young age before beginning his formal art education at the Accademia under Pompeo Marino Molmenti (1819-1894).
Influenced by Molmenti, his initial works were of historical subjects including ‘Henry III visiting Veronica Franco’ and ‘The Arrival of Henry III in Venice’ which he exhibited in Venice from 1860. Two of his paintings: ‘The death of Fra' Paolo Sarpi’ and ‘The scribe in the Porta della Carta’ were reproduced by the Società Promotrice for its members. Around this time, he married Giuseppina Tedesco and they started a family. Theiir son Sylvius Davide Paoletti (1864-1921) also became an artist.
Perhaps in part due to his becoming a parent, he began to specialise in anecdotal paintings of children and women, usually against the stunning backdrop of his home City. He also painted a number of frescos for churches including the main altarpiece depicting the Madonna of the Rosary with St Anthony and St Materno for the parish church of Melara.
Paoletti also exhibited his work at a number of major galleries outside Venice including Milan from 1872, Florence, Venice and Turin. He also exhibited paintings in Vienna from 1873 and Antwerp and England during the 1880’s. Like his father, he went on to become a professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. He died in Venice on 13 December, 1912.
Examples of his work are held by the Haworth Gallery, Litchfield District Council, Sheffield Museum and Sunderland Museum.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Collecting Flowers
Oil on canvas, signed with monogram
Image size: 23.5 inches x 17.75 inches
Size including frame: 29.25 inches x 23.5 inches
A highly appealing genre painting of a young girl holding flowers by Jane Maria Bowkett. The girl is posed in a wild flower meadow in front of a wooded area and wears a white lace dress with a pink sash. On her head is a yellow straw hat decorated with white feathers and a ribbon. She is shown gripping the brim of her bonnet with one hand whilst holding a posy of flowers in the other. The girl bears a resemblance to the models featured in some of the artist's other paintings and could well have been a family member.
Jane Maria Bowkett was a figure and genre painter born in Poplar, London on 17 September, 1837, the eldest child of Thomas Edward Bowkett and Jane Bowkett (nèe Watkinson). The family lived at East India Road where he father practiced as a surgeon, later becoming a doctor and was involved in the Chartist movement. Three of her sisters, Eliza Martha Bowkett (1839-1867), Jessie Undine Bowkett (1861-1886) and Leila Matilda Bowkett (1853-1924) also became artists.
She attended the Government School of Design (now Royal College of Art) and in 1858 began her exhibiting career at the Society of Female Artist. In 1860, she started exhibiting at the British Institution and a year later made her debut at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. As well as exhibiting in London, she also exhibited more widely at the Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Bristol Academy of Art and the Brighton Art Society. Most of her paintings were genre scenes featuring woman and children in a mixture of both interior and landscape settings. Her work also included a number of beach and coastal paintings.
She married the still life and landscape artist Charles Stuart on 7 February, 1862 at All Saints Church in West Ham. Although married, she continued exhibiting under her maiden name. The couple spent the first years of their married life living in Stepney Causeway where they started a family. One of their sons Charles Edward Gordon...

A wonderful genre painting by Charles Hunt of two men and two boys with horses and other animals in a cottage. A farmer and his two sons can be seen eating lunch at a table in rustic interior as a visitor approaches. Perhaps encouraged by the boys, a piglet seems to have found its way onto the table whilst a rabbit and guinea pig eat cabbage leaves on the floor. To the far right, a horse is shown in a stable area along with some piglets. To the far left, a terrier waits on the step by its master.

A lovely portrait of a young woman pouring a cup of tea, by Pierre Louis Bouchard. The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person.
Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860). He then moved to Paris where he became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He also studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin...
