About the Item

Wonderful mid century figurative/portrait expressionist figurative painting of woman and various facets of her life by Audrey E. Gabrielson (American, 1932-2018), 1959. Signed and dated lower right corner Condition: Good; professionally relaid and cleaned. Unframed. Image size: 30"H x 24"W. Audrey Gabrielson was an artist, poetess, sculptor, whom lived in San Francisco. She was born in Canada in 1932 and drew, colored, modeled in clay when very young. She studied at Reed College, Portland, studying with famous West Coast artist, Louis Bunce. in San Francisco she painted with artists Cucaro, Alexander E. Anderson, and Raymond Howell. She had shown in North Beach, Modesto, Gualuala Hotel, Sausalito, Abbey Party Rents (S.F.) and many more. She had ongoing exhibits at Alberta Art, Red Deer and Uglies, Lacombe. Her art was collected by national and international collectors such as authors C.Y. Lee (“Flower Drum Song”), Alfred Coppel (“34 East”); musical promoter, Ilka Pardinas, FLY, Los Angeles. Additionally, she worked in bronze, studying under S.F. sculptor C.B. Johnson. Her art was influenced and inspired by German Expressionists, Van Gogh, Lautrec, Picasso, Klimpt, Schiele, Tamayo, Conners, Park – and many more. Obituary: Born in Alberta, Canada, Audrey passed away at her home in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood, surrounded by loved ones. Gabrielson was an artist, poet, sculptor, photographer, muse and an integral part of the San Francisco art scene of the late 1950s to late 1970s. She was a friend and contemporary of artists such as Benny Bufano, Jean Varda, Pascal Cucaro, Alfonso Pardinas, Alexander E. Anderson, Charles Dawkins, Raymond Howell, Leonard Cahn and more. Her paintings have hung in San Francisco, in locations such as the famous Hungry I, as well as Modesto, Gualuala, Berkeley, and Sausalito. A collection of her paintings are on permanent exhibition at Alberta Art in Red Deer and Uglies in Lacombe, Canada. Gabrielson's interest in art began at a young age. She drew, modeled in clay, and studied art by correspondence and began winning honors. Her introduction to oils began with a Canadian Indian instructor and later continued at Reed College in Portland, Oregon where she studied under the famous West Coast artist, Louis Bunce. She also worked in bronze, studying under San Francisco sculptor C.B. Johnson. After retiring from a career as a Secretary of the Courts for the San Francisco Superior Court, she dedicated herself to her art, focusing on oils, acrylics, water colors and photography. A lover of all of the arts, Gabrielson had a passion for gems and minerals and was very involved with the San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society. She held season tickets for the San Francisco Ballet and Opera for many decades, in addition to regularly attending local and independent artists exhibitions and installations, touring bands and musicians, and other performances in and around San Francisco. Signed and dated lower left corner and on verso Provenance: Purchased as part of larger collection of artist's work from the estate of Larry Miller fine Art Unframed. Canvas size: 18"H x 16"W. Patricia Gren Hayes (American, b. 1932) is a Bay Area Figurative & Feminist Art Movement artist who studied at Winnipeg Public Art School in 1950. She received early recognition in Museum and Gallery competitions and exhibitions and was awarded a Special Education in Art recognition by the Winnipeg Museum of Fine Art, and was awarded a scholarship to the Banff College of Fine Art. Further studies were at The University of Manitoba. She was a Member of Winnipeg Free Press Sketch Club and was a Cartoonist and paste-up for a French-English bi-weekly, in Eastern Canada; She studied outdoor impressionism in New York in 1960; in 1962, attended The California College of Arts and Crafts, and in 1976 B.A., U.C. Berkeley where she studied under Elmer Bischoff, David Simpson, Joan Brown, Felix Ruvolo, Yolanda Lopez and Vincent Perez. She started a freelance commercial art business in 1963; copyrighted a National Cartoon, 1976, and served as Exhibition Director for San Francisco Woman Artists Gallery and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1976-1978. She was a workshop instructor at the San Francisco Woman Artists Gallery, 1977-1985; and was Manager/Owner Stanton Art Gallery, Alameda, CA, 1976-1982.
