Born in Philadelphia in 1915, Benjamin Eisenstat was educated at the Fleisher Art Memorial, The Barnes Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After serving in World War II he returned to Philadelphia with a portfolio of paintings and drawings and began a fifty-five year career in art during which he had 32 solo exhibitions and participated in group shows at the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the American Watercolor Society, The New York Society of Illustrators, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the Chicago Art Institute, among others.
Known for his quick wit and kind regard for students, Mr. Eisenstat was a popular instructor in Philadelphia art schools, teaching classes at the Fleisher Art Memorial, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and for 40 years at Philadelphia's University of the Arts where he taught drawing, painting and illustration, served as the chair of the Illustration Program in the 1970s, and retired as a professor emeritus.

Benjamin Eisenstat
