Benjamin Stahl
"She struggled to free herself" Magazine Story illustration for the Post

1943

About the Item

Magazine story illustration for part four of “Black Jack” by Robert E. Pinkerton, published in The Saturday Evening Post, December 11, 1943, page 32. This compelling illustration, created for the fourth installment of Robert E. Pinkerton's "Black Jack" in The Saturday Evening Post, captures a dramatic moment of conflict between lovers. Set during World War II, the fast-paced serial revolves around a young man embroiled in a conflict with both his wealthy family and his romantic partner. The accompanying caption reads: "She came toward him quickly, and instead of stepping aside to let her pass he took her in his arms. She struggled to free herself." Stahl masterfully enhances the dramatic tension of this intimate scene by strategically placing a dim light source in an adjacent room, casting shadows across the figures within the darkened kitchen. This attractively priced watercolor, offered unframed, retains the original Post labels on its reverse. A prolific illustrator, Stahl contributed to numerous leading publications, including Woman's Home Companion, Esquire, and American Magazine, with his work gracing over 750 stories in The Saturday Evening Post alone.
